Neely Maurus picked the perfect time to play the best golf of her prep career.

In her first career state tournament appearance Maurus posted back-to-back career-low rounds on her way to an 11th place finish on Wednesday at the Class 4A state meet at Coldwater Golf Links in Ames.

Maurus shot a career-best 82 on her opening round on Wednesday and followed it up with a new career-low 80 on Wednesday while finishing the two-day event at 20 over par.

The Liberty High sophomore finished one stroke out of the top 10 as Lauren Sease of Ankeny Centennial shot a 161 to place 10th.

Paige Hoffman of West Des Moines Valley fired a five-under-par two-day total of 137 to win the individual by one stroke over Bettendorf’s Shannyn Vogler.

The individual title by Hoffman helped West Des Moines Valley win the team title with a 631, 25 strokes better than runner-up Bettendorf.

Making her first ever state meet appearance Maurus shot a 42 on the opening nine on Tuesday but responded with three straight nine-hole scores of 41 or lower.

Maurus closed her round on Tuesday by shooting a 40 on the back nine.

On Wednesday Maurus opener with a bogey on the par-three 11th and then carded back-to-back double bogeys.

Maurus responded with a string of seven consecutive pars and after bogeys on the third and fourth holes played the next four holes one under after a birdie on the par-five seventh.

She finished with a 39 on the front nine and a 41 on the back nine on Wednesday on her way to a career-low 80.
