Softball Roundup: City Takes a Pair of Thrillers, Liberty and Solon Sweep

The Little Hawks scored two runs in the seventh inning to defeat Hempstead 5-4 on Thursday, sweeping the double header with a pair of one-run victories.
Ayana Lindsey tripled to lead off the final inning and scored the tying run on a one-out single to left by Carey Koenig. Koenig advanced to third on an error and Syndey Fellows put an 0-2 pitch in play to score the go-ahead run.
Lindsey retired the side in order in the seventh and the Little Hawks left Dubuque with a 4-0 record.
Lindsey finished 3-4 with three runs scored, while Fellows was 2-4 with three RBI. Ella Cook went six innings in the circle to pick up the win.
City High and Hempstead needed extra innings to decide the early matchup. The Little Hawks prevailed in the pitching duel 2-1 as Lindsey threw all nine innings and struck out 13.
The Mustangs scored one unearned run on four hits. Lindsey did not walk a batter.
Kelli Potter had the go-ahead double for City in the ninth to score Koenig.
Cook walked and scored on a passed ball in the first inning to give City a 1-0 lead which lasted until the sixth inning.
Liberty Sweeps Opening Day Doubleheader
Liberty opened the season with a 9-2, 7-1 sweep of Waterloo East on Thursday night.
Brylee Klosterman was 4-8 with five RBI on the day for the Lightning. Her two-RBI single in the third inning of the early game put the Lightning ahead 7-0, capping a four-run inning.
Addie Schmierer tripled in the first inning and scored the first run of the game. She had a three-base hit again in the sixth and scored the final run of the game as well, finishing 3-4.
Kara Maiers was outstanding in the circle, allowing one earned run on two hits and three walks. She struck out 11 over seven innings.
Miranda Jones drove in the first two runs of the nightcap with a base hit in the first, and Klosterman pushed two more across with a single in the second.
Kinsley Robertson allowed one run over six innings to pick up the victory in the late game. She allowed six hits, no walks, and struck out five.
Spartan Bats Stay Hot
The Spartans are 4-0 after beating Vinton-Shellsburg 10-0 and 12-3 on Thursday in Solon.
Kayla West threw five shoutout innings in the early game and put the Spartans up 5-0 with her second inning solo shot.
Camryn Keith added a home run in the late contest.
The Spartans have scored 53 runs in four games this season.
