Baseball Roundup: Solon and Liberty Split Season-opening Doubleheader

Liberty High and Solon split a non-conference doubleheader on Monday in the season opener for both teams at Mount Mercy College in Cedar Rapids.
Solon won the opener 5-1 behind a strong outing from junior Lucas Walker and Liberty High battled back to win the nightcap 11-8, breaking an 8-all tie with three runs in the fifth inning.
Walker allowed just three hits in six shutout innings in the opener striking out five and walking three while picking up the win.
Cole Arduser provided the offense going 3-for-3 with a double and two RBI while Ryan Geistkemper drove in two runs.
Cam Miller had a hit and scored a run and Brady Jeworrek had a hit and scored twice for the Spartans.
Cayden Duhaime had a hit and scored a run for Liberty High in the opener.
Liberty High scored runs in each of the first five innings of the nightcap, capped by a three-run fifth inning.
Keian Secrist had two hits and drove in three runs in the game-two win while Nolan Frey had a hit, scored a run and drove in four.
Isaac Bender had a hit, scored twice and drove in a run and Tyler Dahm doubled and scored three runs for Liberty High.
Arduser went 2-3 with a run and an RBI in game two for Solon while Jackson Pipolo had a triple, scored twice and drove in two runs.

Top-ranked Wilton Edges West Branch in Pitchers Duel
Wilton’s Jared Townsend struck out 12 to outduel West Branch junior Matt Paulsen as top-ranked Wilton down West Branch 1-0 in the season opener for both teams in Wilton.
Paulsen allowed just one hit, striking out four and walking nine in a strong opening outing but it wasn’t enough as West Branch managed just two hits against Townsend.
Trey Eagle went 2-for-3 to account for all the hits against the Wilton left-hander.
