DES MOINES – Luke Stein wanted to end his career with his highest state meet finish and an all-time best throw in the shot put.
The Regina senior got half of that on Thursday at the Class 2A state meet at Drake Stadium in Des Moines.
Stein earned a second consecutive state medal in the shot put, moving up two spots from last year but came up short of his career-best mark on Thursday finishing third with a throw of 52-8 ¾.
“I’m happy to be here, happy to compete, happy to get third place,” Stein said. “But it wasn’t the exact finish I was looking for.”
Stein earned his first career medal last season placing fifth with a mark of 53-6.
His finish improved this season but he couldn’t match his distance from last year, scratching on each of his final three attempts in the finals.
“I think the right mindset isn’t going in to win it’s going in to throw as far as you can,” Stein said. “You can throw 52 feet and win technically but you’d still be really upset with that. My goal was to throw as far as I could and however the cards fall that’s how it is. I think I could have thrown farther today but I’m happy to get third place.”
Stein entered with the second best throw in Class 2A this season at 56-2 and logged his best throw on his first attempt on Thursday.
The senior couldn’t improve on that mark with fouls on four of his final five attempts.
New Hampton senior and Iowa football recruit Noah Fenske entered with the top throw in the state this season at 60-11 ¼ and won the title with a toss of 60-0 ¼.
Waukon senior Brady Sullivan was second with a mark of 56-5 ½.
“I came in here knowing I could get second so it’s kind of disappointing to get third,” Stein said. “I didn’t throw my best, to get second I would have had to throw a pr which I think I was capable of today.”
Stein will get one final chance to add to his medal count Friday when he makes his first state meet appearance in the discus.
Solon senior Coal Flansburg also ended his career with a state medal Thursday placing seventh in the 3A discus with a toss of 155-3.
Mount Vernon senior Matt Vislisel won the 3A title with a toss of 174-1 while Nick DeJong of Pella was second with a throw of 163-5.
