Next month Erin Kerkhoff will look to put the finishing touches on a brilliant prep career with a strong performance at the state track and field meet.
On Sunday Kerkhoff locked up her plans for the future beyond next month.
Kerkhoff announced her college plans Sunday evening on Twitter when she gave a commitment to continue her track career at the University of Northern Iowa.
“I am so excited to announce my commitment to run track at the University of Northern Iowa,” Kerkhoff wrote on Twitter. “I have had so much support from my parents, coaches and teammates and I would not be where I am today without all of them.”
A two-time four-event state qualifier, Kerkhoff emerged as one of the top performers in the state last season when she earned four medals at the Class 3A state meet.
The four state medals last spring including a fifth-place finish in the 400 meters and gave Kerkhoff seven state medals in her career.
Kerkhoff helped Solon to a runner-up finish in the 4×400 relay in a school record time for the second straight season last spring and also rank on the Spartans’ 4×200 and sprint medley relay teams that each placed fourth.
Also a multi-year state qualifier in cross country, Kerkhoff has earned a state medal in the 400 each of the past three seasons placing sixth as a freshman and sophomore.
Kerkhoff has been at her best this season as a senior.
She currently ranks in the top seven in Class 3A in four different individual events and her time of 58.19 in the 400 is the third fastest in the state this spring.
Kerkhoff also has top-seven times in 3A in the 200 (26.62), 100 (12.88) and 400 hurdles (1:08.23).
