The 2019 Your Prep Sports Area Wrestling Team
Your Prep Sports
The Your Prep Sports wrestling team honors the top wrestlers in the area for their performances on the mat this season.
This year’s team features a state champion and a state runner-up among 11 state medalists.
Solon freshman Hayden Taylor is the Your Prep Sports wrestler of the year after going 51-2 and becoming the fifth state champion in Solon history.
Taylor had a pin, a tech fall and a major decision on his way to becoming the first freshman champion in program history.
Included in his run to the 126-pound title was a 15-0 win over unbeaten defending state champion Andrew Flora of ADM.
2019 Your Prep Sports Wrestling Team
106 – Ethan Wood Finley (36-5) Jr., City High: For the second consecutive season won MVC and district titles before finishing fifth at the Class 3A state meet.
113 – Parker McBride (25-13) Fr., West High: Won 25 matches and finished third at the district meet in his varsity debut season.
120 – Hunter Garvin (39-4) Fr., West High: Capped an impressive debut season that featured MVC and district titles with a runner-up finish at the 3A state meet.
126 – *Hayden Taylor (51-2) Fr., Solon: Was dominant at the 2A state meet on his way to becoming the first freshman champ in Solon history earning a 15-0 tech. fall over a defending state champion in the semifinals and an 11-3 major decision in the title match.
132 – Zeb Gnida (40-12) Sr., Solon: Picked up a second state medal in as many seasons with a sixth-place finish at the 2A state meet.
138 – Graham Gambrall (37-12) Soph., West High: Won conference and district titles for the second straight season before earning a second consecutive state medal with an eighth-place finish.
145 – Andrew Rohret (45-9) Sr., Clear Creek Amana: In his first season competing in Class 3A Rohret won a career-high 45 matches, a district title and went 4-2 at the state meet en route to a fifth-place finish.
152 – Zack Bevans (45-7) Sr., Solon: Claimed WAMAC Conference, sectional and district titles before going 1-2 at the state meet with back-to-back 3-1 loss to top-six ranked opponents.
160 – Brandon Lalla (32-10) Sr. City High: Just missed a second consecutive state meet appearance with back-to-back 3-2 losses at the district meet.
170 – Ashton Barker (21-5) Soph., Liberty High: Made history as the first state qualifier and state medalist at Liberty High winning a district title and placing third at the 3A state meet.
182 – Will Hoeft (37-9) Jr., West High: Suffered a torn ACL at the MVC Super Meet but went on to win a district title and pick up the first state medal of his career with a sixth-place finish.
195 – Landon Green (38-11) Sr., West High: Spent most of the season at 195 pounds before making the move up to 220 for the postseason where he won a district title and placed sixth at the state meet.
220 – Mike Hoyle (45-4) Sr., Solon: Opened the season with 29 consecutive wins and earned the first medal of his career in his third consecutive state meet appearance.
285 – Jacob Murry (32-6) Sr., City High: Earned the first state medal of his career in his second consecutive trip to the state meet finishing seventh in Class 3A.
