Ashton Barker added another to his growing list of firsts on Saturday morning at the Class 3A state wrestling tournament.

Barker became the first state qualifier in Liberty High history last week, earned the program’s first win at the state meet on Thursday and reached the semifinals on Friday.

On Saturday he became the first Bolt to stand on the podium at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines.

Barker (21-5) won a pair of consolations matches on his way to a third-place finish at 170-pounds.

The sophomore bounced back from an 11-4 semifinal loss to Ankeny Centennial junior Logan Neils with a 7-5 win over No. 5 Jake Hosch of Western Dubuque in the consolation semifinals.

No. 8 Barker then pinned third-ranked Blake Underwood of West Des Moines Valley in the third-place match.

Barker wasn’t the only area athlete to earn some state hardware in Class on Saturday.

City High junior Ethan Wood-Finley (36-5) secured a fifth-place finish with a 7-1 decision over Bettendorf freshman Dustin Bohren and teammate Jacob Murry (32-6) was seventh at 285 pounds.

Clear Creek Amana senior Andrew Rohret (45-9) closed his career with a win, pinning No. 10 Nathan Wallace of Mount Pleasant in 1:51 in the fifth-place match at 145 pounds.

West High had five medalists as Hunter Garvin finished runner-up at 120 and Will Hoeft (170) and Landon Green (220) were both sixth.

Graham Gambrall (138) and Grant O’Dell (106) each finished eighth.
