Three down, one to go for West High freshman Hunter Garvin.
Garvin continued his dominating run through the 120-pound bracket at the Class 3A state tournament with a resounding 14-2 major decision over third-ranked Thomas Edwards of Johnston in the semifinals on Friday afternoon at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines.
The semifinal win on Friday sends Garvin into the state title match on Saturday at 6 p.m. and continued an impressive two-day stretch in which Garvin has run roughshod over opponents.
Garvin will face Fort Dodge junior Carson Taylor (37-5) in the 3A 120-pound title match on Saturday.
Taylor won the other semifinal by injury default over two-time state champion and top-ranked Cullan Schriever of Mason City.
“Hunter has wrestled two days extremely hard but it’s a three-day tournament,” West High coach Nate Moore said. “We need to finish it out.”
Garvin (39-3) has been a scoring machine in his three state tournament wins racking up 46 points in a tech fall, a decision and Friday’s semifinal major decision.
“He was just trying to get his stuff and I countered it by just wrestling into my stuff and making sure I could control the match,” Garvin said. “
Garvin will try to keep that going on Saturday as he seeks to become the first freshman state champion for West High since Nick Moore in 2007.
West High had two wrestlers pick up consolation wins on Friday afternoon as senior Landon Green and junior Will Hoeft both advanced to the consolation semifinals.
Green (38-9) avenged two regular season losses to fourth-ranked Tanner Schultz of Linn-Mar with a third-period pin at 220-pounds while Hoeft (37-7) won a 6-2 decision over Justin Brindley at 182 pounds.
Both Green and Hoeft can finish third with a pair of wins on Saturday morning.
Liberty High sophomore Ashton Barker (19-5) had his title chances end with an 11-4 semifinal loss to second-ranked Logan Neils of Ankeny Centennial in a 170-pound semifinal.
City High junior Ethan Wood-Finley (35-4) picked up a 10-0 major decision over West High freshman Grant O’Dell in a 106-pound consolation match.
Clear Creek Amana senior Andrew Rohret also advanced in the consolation bracket with a 10-4 win over Logan Adamson of Bettendorf.
