CEDAR RAPIDS – In it second season of varsity wrestling Liberty High has its first state qualifier.

Sophomore Ashton Barker became the first state qualifier in Liberty High history on Saturday winning the 170-pound title at the Class 3A, District 7 meet at Cedar Rapids Prairie.

Barker (17-4) pinned his way to the 170-pound title and a spot at the state meet.

Class 3A eighth-ranked Barker needed 3:32 to pin Burlington’s Landon Wynn in the semifinal and just 3:02 to secure the title with a pin of City High senior Joe Ring in the title match.

The title from Barker helped Liberty High to a seventh-place team finish with 85 points.

City High won the district title with 210 points followed by host Cedar Rapids Prairie and West High.

Barker will face Norwalk sophomore Tristen Duncan (20-13) in the opening round of the Class 3A state meet on Thursday at Wells Fargo Arena in Des  Moines.
