IOWA CITY – Winter weather forced many wrestling teams across the state to stay at home on Saturday afternoon.
Solon wasn’t among those teams but the Spartans stayed much closer to home than they planned.
The original schedule had Solon making its annual trek to Ida Grove for the Herb Irgens Invitational but the snowy forecast nixed that trip.
Friday afternoon Solon found a spot in the Anamosa Invite but that tournament was eventually cancelled.
The third tournament was the charm for Solon which traveled a few miles up Highway 1 on Saturday to win the title at the Bean City Duals at City High.
“We just kept getting closer to home, Ida Grove, Anamosa then finally City High,” Solon coach Blake Williams said. “There weren’t many tournaments around the state at all so it was good to be able to wrestle and then to wrestle pretty well.”
Class 2A sixth-ranked Solon went 3-0 at the four-team dual tournament that shrunk from seven teams thanks to Friday night’s snow storm.
Solon rolled past Muscatine 52-21 and defeated Cedar Rapids Xavier 66-9 before taking down City High 47-24 in what proved to be the title match.
Six Spartans posted perfect records and earned spots on the all tournament team on Saturday as Solon improved its dual record to 24-1 on the season.
“It’s kind of two-fold, I think everybody wants to get matches but every team is different some might be trying to heal up,” Williams said of finding a tournament on Saturday. “Our kids want to keep wrestling and they want to wrestle good competition and we saw some of that here so it was good. I’m glad they let us in.”
City High finished runner-up at its home tournament after claiming the title last season.
The Little Hawks downed Cedar Rapids Xavier 63-12 and Muscatine 50-30 before dropping its final match to Solon.
City High had five unbeaten wrestlers earn all-tournament team honors on Saturday but got a win by getting its home tournament in after many around the state were called off.
“We wanted to get it in and we wanted to do anything we could to wrestle today,” City High coach Cory Connell said. “Everyone here wanted to wrestle, even the teams that couldn’t make it wanted to wrestle but they had to make calls that were the safest for them. I told our guys to be ready. We knew if only one team beside us shows up we are going to wrestle so I think they were ready.”
Solon won nine matches in the championship dual against City High, earning bonus points in eight including five pins.
The Spartans opened up an 8-0 lead with back-to-back major decisions.
Colton Spillman earned a 16-4 win over Reece Caven at 145 pounds and 2A No. 6 Zack Bevans recorded a 10-2 win over 3A No. 5 Kyle Hefley.
“Those are matches we can win and in tight duals, big duals you have to win some of those matches that you maybe shouldn’t and then win the ones you should,” Connell said. “You have to win those matches if you want to be a big-time team.”
Brandon Lalla edged Andy Brokaw 7-6 at 160 pounds to get City High on the board but Solon won the next four matches, three via pin to take a 29-3 lead.
Jax Flynn, Seamus Poynton and Mike Hoyle all recorded pins to go with a 7-2 win by Adam Bock at 195 pounds.
“The first two matches Colton Spillman wrestled a good kid and Zack Bevans went out and beat a very tough kid we were up 8-0 after two thinking going in that those were toss up matches so that was a great start,” Williams said. “Some of our horses kept it going with some falls and that was great. They are a good team.”
Jakobe Lahr (113), Hayden Taylor (126), Bevans (152), Flynn (170) and Hoyle (220) all went 3-0 for Solon and Spillman was 2-0 en route to all-tournament team honors.
Ethan Wood-Finley (106), Garrett Bormann (120), Ryan Ceynar (138), Lalla (3-0) and Jacoby Murry (285) all went 3-0 for City High.
