IOWA CITY – The big hammers in the West High lineup did much of the heavy lifting on Saturday as the Trojans claimed the title at their own Lepic Duals.

Four ranked West High wrestlers went a combined 19-1 Saturday as the Trojans won all five duals by at least 19 points.

Even with the top Trojans taking care of business make no mistake everyone in Green and Gold had a hand in the first home tournament title for West High since 2014.

“For the most part we fought,” first-year West High coach Nate Moore said. “Right now it’s a big deal for everybody to fight from 106 to heavyweight, it’s one of the things we are working on is just effort and fighting and I thought that was pretty good today all the way through.”

In five dual wins 16 different wrestlers recorded victories as West High won the team title for the ninth time in 27 years of the Lepic Duals.

Landon Green, Will Hoeft and Hunter Garvin all went a perfect 5-0 for West High as the Trojans bounced back from a dual loss to cross-town rival City High on Friday.

“It felt great because it was a team win,” Green said. “I think everybody put in their maximum effort and that’s what we want.”

West High rolled to a 59-16 win over Mediapolis in its opener before taking downing Council Bluffs Lewis Central 42-30 and Quincy (Illinois) 78-4.

The Trojans closed out the title with a 48-27 win over Fort Madison and a 58-15 win over Pleasant Valley.

West High won the tournament four straight years from 2009 to 2012 and again in 2014 but hadn’t won since, finishing behind Fort Dodge each of the past two seasons.

“It feels great,” Hoeft said. “I’ve never been around when we’ve won this thing so it feels good to have some success here at home.”

West High trailed Fort Madison 27-16 after nine matches but closed the dual with five consecutive wins including four by fall.

Hoeft had a 34-second pin that that stretch that helped West High pull ahead as freshman Mason Applegate and Brett Pelfrey each added pins down the stretch along with senior Jo Dixon.  

“This is really important to those guys that maybe haven’t had as much success,” Hoeft said. “It’s big to get some wins for confidence and I thought everyone wrestled well today.”

Hoeft, who is ranked fourth in Class 3A at 182 pounds joined freshman standout Garvin and Green in going unbeaten on Saturday.

Green had a pair of pins on his way to a perfect 5-0 performance while bouncing between 195 and 220 while Garvin had two pins in a 5-0 day at 120.

“I don’t know if I am o.k. with where we are at right now because we have a long way to go but we are doing the things we need to do to get to where we need to be,” Moore said. “I know it’s going to be a process and we have to get through it.”

Graham Gambrall went 4-1 with a loss to top-ranked Eli Loyd of Pleasant Valley at 138 pounds while freshmen Grant O’Dell and Applegate, junior Collin Leavy and Dixon were among the wrestlers with four wins for West High.
