SOLON – The high school wrestling season doesn’t allow for much time off.
With the majority of the schedule condensed into a little more than two months there just isn’t much down time to be had for prep wrestlers.
Solon will get short break over the next several days and it is well deserved after the showing the Spartans had Thursday.
Class 2A sixth-ranked Solon rolled to four wins to claim the title at its own pre-holiday dual event in Solon.
“We are giving them a few days off, we’ll come back right after Christmas, but that is a good way to go into the break,” Solon coach Blake Williams said. “I think some guys got a little bit more confidence and some of those young guys were in a lot of those matches.”
The Spartans lost just 11 matches total on Thursday while rolling to wins over Midland, Keokuk, Vinton-Shellsburg and South Tama.
Seven Spartans went 4-0 on Thursday as Solon continued its strong start to the season.
Solon won the South Tama dual tournament on December 8 and earned the team title at the Regina Invitational last Saturday.
“I think overall we are in a good spot but there are a lot of little things that we need to work on,” Williams said. “The guys I think are hungry to try to get back to where we were.
Solon opened with a 68-12 win over Midland and followed with a 78-3 win over Keokuk.
The Spartans closed the evening with consecutive wins over WAMAC opponents, 53-22 over Vinton-Shellsburg and 58-15 over South Tama.
Solon had 15 pins on Thursday and had three wrestlers with two pins on the evening.
Freshman Hayden Taylor, Zack Bevans and Seamus Poynton all finished 4-0 on Thursday with a pair of wins via fall.
That trio joined Zeb Gnida, Jax Flynn, Adam Bock and Mike Hoyle as Spartans to earn four victories.
“Some of our guys had a really good week of practice and that’s made a huge difference,” Williams said. “Seamus Poynton is really looking good. He’s looking good in the practice room and that is carrying over to nights like this. He just wears people out.”
Solon returns to action on January 3 when it travels to Dyersville Beckman for a WAMAC Conference dual.
The Spartans are at the Marshalltown Dual tournament the following weekend and the challenges only get tougher from that point on.
“They’ve got high goals for themselves individually and as a team but that’s down the road,” Williams said. “You just have to go week by week and practice by practice and keep getting better.
