IOWA CITY – Joey Molony gave Regina hope with a late 3-pointer that forced overtime.

Reid Rausch and his Cascade teammates made sure that it didn’t last for long.

Rausch scored the go-ahead basket on a driving layup with 1:31 left in overtime as defending 2A state champion Cascade escaped with a 61-58 win over Regina in a River Valley Conference cross-divisional matchup in Iowa City.

The win improved Cascade to 4-3 on the season and 4-2 in RVC play while Regina dropped to 5-2.

“Every year it’s a heck of a program at Cascade, they run their stuff well, they have good fundamentals and they know what they do and they do it well,” Regina junior point guard Masen Miller said. “No matter what their record is 3-3 or 3-4 or whatever they will come out and beat you on any given night.”

It took a late triple from Molony to get Regina to overtime.

Cascade took a 56-53 lead on two free throws by senior Brett Bower with 21 seconds left.

Molony checked in before the ensuing Regina possession and promptly drilled a deep 3-pointer from the win to send the game to overtime tied at 56.

“Joey can do that. He is a good perimeter shooter,” Regina coach Jared Galpin said. “He has really worked hard in practice to have his role evolve and I have confidence in him when he comes in to step up and knock down a shot.”

Regina had its chances in the extra session.

The Regals took a 58-57 lead on a Luke Stein jumper with 2:54 left and had two more possession with the lead.

Each ended with a missed shot and a Rausch rebound.

“We had a lot of good looks,” Galpin said. “We had a one-point lead with possession and we had a patient possession and then we just missed a shot in the lane. It was a good shot, we were patient and got a high-percentage shot.”

Cascade finally took advantage when Rausch knifed to the hoop for a layup with 1:31 left for the game’s final field goal.

Regina missed its final four shots, three from 3-point range, and went just 3-of-20 from the field in the fourth quarter and overtime.

“We had good looks to tie it up or take the lead and we had some perimeter shots that didn’t go down,” Galpin said. “We didn’t shoot it great but we did some good things on offense.”

With Cascade focused on slowing Miller several Regals stepped up offensive.

Stein had a team-high 16 points while Bryce Barnett had 13 to go with 15 from Miller.

Yet Regina shot just 34 percent from the field in the game including 21 percent in the second half and overtime.

“They put so attention on Masen we tried to run some screens for him to get him open but he was drawing a lot of people but in turn that gave us a lot of good looks,” Galpin said. “We just didn’t finish some shots tonight like we needed to.”

Carter Green had 15 points and Rausch added 13 points and 15 rebounds for Cascade.
