Clear Creek Amana used a strong running game and a stingy defense to post the best regular season in program history.

On Friday Decorah used the same formula to win a playoff game.

Decorah rushed for 330 yards and limited No. 10 Clear Creek Amana to 174 total yards in a 17-6 win in a Class 3A opening round contest in Decorah.

The win was the seventh straight for Decorah (8-2) which earned a rematch with top-ranked Cedar Rapids Xavier (10-0) in the 3A quarterfinals.

Clear Creek Amana, which opened the season 7-0 for the first time in program history and set a school record with eight regular season wins, finishes 8-2.

The Clippers struck first on a 4-yard touchdown run by senior quarterback Andrew Rohret with 4:20 left in the opening quarter.

It was all Vikings the rest of the way.

Decorah scored 17 unanswered points spurred by a pair of touchdown runs by senior Kailer McCabe to advance to the 3A quarterfinals for the first time since 2015.

McCabe gave the Vikings a 7-6 lead when he capped a 70-yard touchdown drive with a 4-yard run with 5:40 left in the opening half.

It stayed 7-6 until McCabe ripped off a 26-yard touchdown run with 8:44 left in the third quarter.

The 212-pound McCabe rushed for a game-high 138 yards and senior Drake Shelton added 108 yards as Decorah rolled up 330 yards on the ground.

Meanwhile the Viking defense kept Rohret and the Clipper offense in check.

Rohret finished with 75 yards on 20 carries but the rest of the Clippers had just 12 yards on 14 carries as Clear Creek Amana finished with a season-low 87 rushing yards.

Rohret threw for 67 yards and also caught a 20-yard pass from Mitch Evans but it wasn’t enough for the Clippers.
