Volleyball Roundup: City High Wins Consolation Bracket at MVC Tournament

The preference for the City High volleyball team was to be playing in the championship bracket at the Mississippi Valley Conference tournament on Saturday.
City High didn’t get that chance but the Little Hawks run to the consolation title was a little extra fulfilling.
Class 5A No. 11 City High avenged regular season losses with wins over West High and Cedar Rapids Prairie in the semifinals and championship on its way to the consolation bracket title at the MVC tournament in Waterloo.
City High record three consecutive three set wins during consolation play to finish the day 4-2 and ended the regular season 23-12.
West High, City High and Liberty High all went 1-2 during pool play and finished third in their respective pools to land in the consolation bracket at the 16-team tournament.
City High fell to Cedar Rapids Kennedy (21-12, 21-17) and Cedar Rapids Jefferson (21-12, 21-11) and defeated host Waterloo East (21-9, 21-14) in pool play.
The Little Hawks responded in bracket play, defeating Waterloo West 29-27, 25-20 in the quarterfinals and edging cross-town rival West High 26-24, 25-19 in the semifinals.
City High avenged a four-set loss to Cedar Rapids Prairie on Tuesday with a 25-12, 25-19 win over the Hawks in the consolation bracket final.
Playing without its kill leader Kelsey Law during the tournament, City High got 43 kills from senior Mackenzie Murphy and 35 from senior Ellie Evans.
Evans led City High with 55 digs while Murphy had 16 aces during the six matches.
Kate Swenning added 27 kills and 10 digs, Brooke Bormann had 33 digs and Eryn Dailey had 30 digs.
Lindsey Bolton had 67 assists and five ace serves while Makayla Ribble had 53 assists and 14 digs.
West High and Liberty High both went 2-3 on Saturday falling in the consolation semifinals.
The Women of Troy fell to Dubuque Wahlert (21-18, 21-18) and Cedar Rapids Xavier (21-12, 19-21, 18-16) and defeated Cedar Rapids Washington (21-13, 21-17) in pool play.
West High swept Dubuque Senior 25-17, 25-23 in the consolation quarterfinals before falling to City High in the semifinals to close the regular season 14-22.
Class 4A No. 14 Liberty High defeated Dubuque Senior (21-15, 21-14) and lost to Linn-Mar (21-15, 21-16) and Western Dubuque (25-27, 21-18, 15-13) in pool play.
The Lightning defeated Cedar Rapids Washington 25-13, 25-16 in the consolation quarterfinals and fell to Cedar Rapids Prairie 27-25, 25-19 in the semifinals to close out the regular season 19-14.
LeeAnn Potter and Olivia Slattery each had 28 kills to lead Liberty High while Sydney Woods had 23 kills.
Lauren Roman added 17 kills, Sam Harvey had 14 kills and Hailey Hested 11 kills for the Lightning.
Hested had a team-high 92 assists while Addie Schmierer led Liberty High with 34 digs and Kaylee Berns had a team-leading eight ace serves.
Class 5A top-ranked Cedar Falls defeated fourth-ranked Cedar Rapids Jefferson in the title match to improve to 42-0 on the season.
