The Regina football team finally is getting healthy and it showed during Friday’s 35-12 victory over North Linn.
Senior Kieler Brown rushed for 97 yards on 25 carries in sloppy, wet conditions and sophomore quarterback Ashton Cook returned from a foot injury to pass for 164 yards and one touchdown as the Regals improved to 4-3 on the season with their third straight win.
“He was great, he was running it behind the double teams and coming out the other end,” Regina coach Marv Cook said of the 5-foot-8, 160-pound Brown. “He was running hard. He did a nice job.”
Sophomore Alec Wick scored Regina’s first touchdown on an 18-yard interception return in the opening quarter.
The Regals then scored three touchdowns on short runs by Brown from three yards, by Scott Arndt from two yards and by Ashton Cook from one yard.
Cook also threw a 37-yard touchdown pass to senior Bryce Barnett, who switched back to receiver after playing quarterback in Cook’s five-game absence.
The sophomore quarterback completed 10-of-21 passes for 164 yards in his return as Regina remained unbeaten in Class 1A, District 6 play.
Regina kept pace with District 6 leader and top-ranked Dike-New Hartford moving to 3-0 in district play while North LInn dropped to 4-3 on the season and 1-2 in District 6 play.
Barnett finished with four catches for 70 yards, while Wick had three receptions for 53 yards.
“It was sloppy,” Marv Cook said of the conditions. “It was rainy for a while. The first half it rained the whole time.”
In addition to Ashton Cook and Scott Arndt both returning from injuries on Friday, senior tight end/defensive end Patrick Clark also played a key role in the victory after being out with an injury finishing with a reception for nine yards and three tackles.
And the timing couldn't be better with just two games left in the regular season.
“If we can get a couple more guys healthy, we’ll be a tough out,” said Marv Cook, who has led Regina to six state titles.
Linebacker Scott Blondin led the Regina defense with seven tackles, while Josh Duchek had an interception for the Regals.
Blondin, Luke Stein and Rowan Udell all had sacks for Regina which held North Linn to 154 rushing yards.
Michael Dunn also made all five of his point-after kicks for Regina.
