Your Prep Sports
Regina was breaking in a new quarterback for the third time in five games on Friday in its district opener against East Marshall.
Bryce Barnett didn’t play much like a third-string quarterback or a first-time starter.
Barnett passed for 313 yards and accounted for four touchdowns as Regina snapped a two-game losing skid with a 28-0 win over East Marshall (0-5) in the Class 1A, District 6 opener for both teams at Regina.
“Bryce was outstanding in his first career start at quarterback,” Regina coach Marv Cook said. “The wide receivers really stepped up to him settle in.”
Eight different receivers caught passes with three Regals hauling in touchdown grabs as Regina improved to 2-3 on the season.
Barnett finished 22-of-30 through the air for 313 yards as Regina rolled up a season-high 391 yards of total offense.
Regina played without starting quarterback Ashton Cook for the third straight game and was without top backup Scott Arendt who threw for 364 yards in two starts before leaving last week’s loss to Williamsburg with an injury.
In stepped Barnett who caught 13 passes for 181 yards and a team-high three touchdowns while playing wide receiver the first four games.
Making his first start under center Barnett threw touchdown strikes to Patrick Clark, Josh Dutchik and Alec Wick and also ran for a touchdown.
After a scoreless first quarter Regina exploded for 21 points in the second quarter.
Regina got on the board when Barnett connected with Clark for a 27-yard touchdown pass and upped the lead to 14-0 on a 4-yard strike from Barnett to Dutchik.
Barnett took it in himself on a 4-yard run to put Regina up 21-0 at the half.
The Regina defense turned away East Marshall twice in the red zone in the third quarter and Barnett hooked up with Wick for a 51-yard scoring pass to give Regina a 28-0 cushion.
Wick led Regina with nine receptions for 143 yards while Clark caught six passes for 68 yards.
Kieler Brown had three grabs for 35 yards and fullback Nick Milder had three for 56.
The Regina defense posted its first shutout since a 35-0 win over Wilton in the 1A quarterfinals last season holding East Marshall to 182 yards of total offense.
Scott Blondin had 5.5 tackles, an interception and forced a fumble while Milder had a team-high six stops from his linebacker spot.
Luke Stein and Dutchik each had 5.5 tackles while Dutchik recovered a fumble and Will Colony had a sack.
