West High Scores 41 Unanswered Points in Win at Dubuque Senior

West High got a wake-up call early in its road trip to Dubuque on Friday.
The Trojans didn’t wait long to respond.
Class 4A sixth-ranked West High scored 41 unanswered points after Dubuque Senior returned the opening kickoff for a touchdown and rolled to a 48-14 win over the Rams at Dalzell Field in Dubuque.
Owen McAreavy ran for two touchdowns and Jalen Gaudet caught a pair of touchdown passes as West High put up a season-high point total while improving to 3-1 with its second consecutive win.
Dubuque Senior dropped to 1-3 with its third consecutive loss.
Noah Gerken gave the Rams an early boost when he returned the opening kickoff 98 yards for a touchdown to put Dubuque Senior up 7-0.
McAreavy evened the score at 7-7 with a 5-yard touchdown run that was set up when Justin Thomas recovered a muffed punt at the Ram 17 yard line.
It remained 7-7 until West rattled off 27 unanswered points in the second quarter.
Landon Green scored on a 16-yard run to give West High its first lead and less than a minute later Grant Henderson scooped up a Harry Blewett fumbled and returned it eight yards for a touchdown.
Gaudet caught a pair of touchdown passes in the final 5:18 of the first half to give West High a 34-7 halftime cushion.
Marcus Morgan hit Gaudet for a 32-yard strike and Joey Kuehn and Gaudet connected for a 40-yard touchdown pass with 23 seconds left in the first half.
McAreavy added a 1-yard touchdown run in the third quarter that pushed the West High lead to 41-7 before DJ Hoskins scored on a 5-yard run to stop the West High scoring streak.
Morgan finished 9-of-20 for 146 yards and a score while Kuehn was 10-of-14 passing for 176 yards and a score.
Gaudet was the top target for both West High quarterbacks hauling in five passes for 122 yards and two touchdowns.
West High will open district play next week at home against Pleasant Valley (1-3).
