While some wins look better than others they all count the same.
Solon’s meeting with West Liberty on Friday was as ugly as it gets but the Spartans still managed to walk away with a win.
Class 3A third-ranked Solon overcame 160 yards of penalties and a pair of interceptions to earn a 7-0 overtime win over West Liberty (0-2) in a non-district contest at Memorial Field in West Liberty.
Junior quarterback Cam Miller scored the game-winning touchdown on a three-yard run in the first overtime as Solon improved to 2-0 on the season and stretched its regular season winning streak to 18.
The Spartans held a 298 to 137 edge in total yards but couldn’t secure the win until West Liberty quarterback Seth Feldman was wrapped up short of the goal line on the final play in overtime.
Friday marked the first time Solon had been shutout for four quarters since a 34-0 loss to Regina in the second game of 2016.
The Spartans had 223 rushing yards and Miller threw for 75 yards but 160 yards worth of penalties contributed to the Spartans inability to put the ball in the end zone.
Solon (2-0) will return to action next week when it hosts Marion (1-1) at Spartan Stadium.
