An arm injury kept Regina ace Ryne Schooley off the mound for the duration of his senior season.
That injury couldn’t stop him from making an impact or off the Iowa High School Baseball Coaches Association All-state team.
Schooley led Regina in nine different offensive categories as the team’s designated hitter this season on his way to earning first-team all-state honors from the IHSBCA for the third consecutive season.
Regina had five players earn all-state honors, highlighted by five first-team picks when the IHSBCA released its postseason honors on Tuesday.
Seniors Mitch Gahan, Trent Hoogerwerf and Blake Berns all joined Schooley on the Class 2A first team while senior Ryan Schott was a second-team selection for Class 2A runner-up Regina.
Solon had three players earn all-state honors led by senior Luke Ira who was named to the Elite team comprised of the top 16 players in the state and the captain of the Class 3A squad.
Senior Kendrick Harris was a first-team selection in Class 3A while Cam Miller was a second-team pick.
West High senior catcher Lucas Karwal was a first-team pick in Class 4A.
Schooley headlines the Regina all-state list, earning first-team honors for the third consecutive season.
He was a first-team utility selection as a sophomore and again this season after earning first-team honors as a pitcher a year ago.
An Iowa Western recruit, Schooley hit a team-high .423 from his leadoff spot and also led Regina in runs (45), hits (52), doubles (13), home runs (5), RBI (41), on-base percentage (.496) and slugging percentage (.650).
Berns earned first-team honors as an outfielder for the second year in a row after hitting .345 with 11 doubles and five home runs.
Berns scored 34 runs and drew 15 walks.
Hoogerwerf and Gahan were each first-team picks for the first time.
Gahan emerged as one of the top pitchers in Class 2A this season posting a 9-3 record and 1.41 ERA in 64 1/3 innings. The right-hander struck out 78 and walked just 11 while allowing opponents to hit just .196 against him.
Hoogerwerf earned first-team honors at catcher after being a second-team pick as a junior.
The senior backstop hit .366 with nine doubles, two home runs and 29 RBI and threw out 12 of the 20 potential base stealers.
Schott earned second team honors as an outfielder after hitting .377 with eight doubles, two triples and two home runs.
A versatile defender that pitched 37 1/3 innings, Schott drove in 27 runs, scored 27 runs and stole 11 bases.
Ira led the trio of Solon all-state selections earning all-state honors for the second year in a row.
A South Dakota State recruit, Ira was named to the 16-member elite team for the first time after hammering a state-leading 19 home runs and driving in 58 runs.
The senior shortstop hit .455 with 64 runs, 12 doubles and 25 walks.
Ira also posted a 6-1 record on the mound with a 1.73 ERA and 85 strikeouts in 52 2/3 innings.
Harris earned first team honors for the first time following a senior season in which he hit .376 and scored 53 runs.
The senior centerfielder had 10 doubles, five home runs and 23 RBI to go with 14 stolen bases.
Miller was a second-team all-state selection as a pitcher after a strong sophomore season that ended with a 9-3 record and 1.07 ERA.
The right-hander struck out 78 and allowed 33 hits in 58 2/3 innings.
Karwal was a first-time first-team pick in Class 4A following a breakthrough senior season.
He led West High with a .412 batting average, 10 doubles, five triples and 32 RBI.
Karwal drew 23 walks while posting a .503 on-base percentage and was second on the team with a .656 slugging percentage.
He also threw out 10 of 12 runners that attempted to steal against him.
