City High Falls to Marshalltown in Substate Final

For the second consecutive season City High came up a single win shy of a spot at the state tournament.
Marshalltown (20-18) scored in each of the first three innings while building a 5-0 lead it would never relinquish in a 9-2 win over City High (24-18) in the Class 4A, Substate 3 title game on Wednesday in Marshalltown.
City High was seeking its first trip to state since 2003 but lost a substate final for the second straight season and closed the year 24-18.
Nate Vance tossed seven strong innings for his second consecutive postseason complete game shutout as Marshalltown reached the state tournament for the first time since 2009.
Vance (9-2) allowed two runs on nine hits while striking out five and walking two in the win.
The senior pitcher helped the Bobcats build an early lead.
Vance walked leading off the first inning and came around to score the game’s first run on a Wade Canaday sac fly.
Vance drove in a run with a single in a two-run Marshalltown second inning and the Bobcats added two more runs in the third when Tate Kuehner was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and Dylan Eygaborad drove in a run with a single to center field.
City High attempted to get back in the game with a pair of runs in the sixth on back-to-back hits by Sam Lewers and Cole Milder with two but Marshalltown responded with four runs in the bottom of the inning.
Ry Threlkeld-Wiegand (7-4) took the loss for City High as City High pitchers combined for four walks and three hit batsmen.
Travis Reyhons and Ben Steve each had two hits for City High while Liam McComas, DJ Heck and Milder all doubled.
