Regina Returns to State Tournament With 4-1 Win Over Central Lee

In a Class 2A postseason filled with upsets and surprises third-ranked Regina just keeps on winning.
Regina stretched its winning streak to 10 and returned to the state tournament for the second consecutive season with a 4-1 win over Central Lee on Tuesday in the 2A, Substate 5 title game in Fairfield.
Mitch Gahan pitched a complete game four-hitter and Ryan Schott put the Regals up for good with a two-run double in the fourth inning as Regina improved to 27-7.
Regina will open state tournament play on Monday at Principal Park in Des Moines.
Central Lee (21-8) took a 1-0 lead just two batters into the game when on a solo home run by Jake Fraise.
It remained 1-0 until the fourth when Regina used four, two-out hits to take a 3-1 lead.
Nick Brandt started the two-out rally with a single and after Hunter Liebermann drew a walk Jayden Kies tied the game at 1-1 with an RBI single.
Ryne Schooley followed with a single and Schott put Regina up 3-1 with a two-run double to left field.
Regina added a run in the fifth when Trent Hoogerwerf led off with a single and scored on an error.
That was more than enough for Gahan who retired 11 of the final 13 batters he faced.
Gahan gave up just one run on four hits and didn’t walk a batter while striking out six in a complete game.
The senior right-hander let just two batters reach base over the final four innings and didn’t allow a hit after the third.
Gahan improved to 8-2 on the season with his fourth consecutive win.
Schooley went 3-for-4 and Schott was 2-for-3 with a double and two RBI to lead Regina.
Kies had a hit, scored a run and drove in a run and Hoogerwerf and Brandt each had a hit and scored a run.
