SOLON – Solon pitcher Kayla West beat the Raiders and the weather on Tuesday.
The sophomore tossed a two-hitter and drove in three runs to lead the Class 3A No. 10 Spartans to an 8-0 win over Anamosa in the first game of a doubleheader.
West hadn’t allowed any hits until the Raiders had back-to-back singles in the sixth inning. She pitched out of that jam and then went three-up and three-down in the top of the seventh inning to secure the victory.
Solon improved to 15-5 overall and 11-4 in the WaMac Conference, while Anamosa fell to 8-12 overall.
The Spartans only scored in two innings and did most of their damage in the third inning when they produced five runs on four hits. West triggered the rally by smacking a two-run double.
Solon added three more runs in the fourth inning as West also keyed that outburst with another run-scoring double.
Solon was leading the second game 2-1 when play was stopped in the third inning due to lightning.
Heavy rain then came shortly after the players had left the field, and it only took a few minutes for standing water to form on the infield and the game was eventually called.
