In the final tournament of his sophomore season Clear Creek Amana’s Brandon McCarty finds himself in a familiar position – near the top of the leaderboard.
There are some familiar faces in front of McCarty after one day at the Class 3A state golf meet.
McCarty is tied for fifth after shooting an opening-round 77 at Lakeside Golf Course in Fort Dodge on Thursday six shots off the pace of co-leaders and WAMAC rivals Rielly McGranahan and Tucker Kinney of Central DeWitt.
McGranahan and Kinney each fired a one-under-par 71 on Thursday and lead Grinnell senior Lucas Scherf by a single stroke heading into Friday’s final round.
McCarty closed his opening round with a one-over 37 on the back nine to keep himself in contention after shooting a 40 with a pair of double bogeys in his opening nine holes.
In his state meet debut McCarty had a double bogey on the par-three second and another double on the par-three ninth to go with a pair of bogeys in the opening round.
McCarty birdied all four par fives on Thursday, closing his round with a birdie on the 507-yard 18th.
