Boys Soccer Roundup: West High, City High Move Into 3A Substate Finals

West High is one win away from earning a chance to defend its Class 3A state title.
Class 3A fifth-ranked West High advanced to the Class 3A, Substate 3 title game with a 10-0 win over Dubuque Hempstead in a substate semifinal on Wednesday at Barker Field in Iowa City.
Gada Ambo scored four goals and freshman Marko Migambi had three as West High improved to 16-3 on the season with its 11th consecutive win.
West High will face No. 14 Cedar Rapids Kennedy in the Substate 3 final on Saturday at Noon at Barker Field.
Cedar Rapids Kennedy defeated seventh-ranked Cedar Rapids Washington 3-2 on Wednesday.
Matthew McDonnell, Tomas Sanchez and Taka Ova all added goals for West High in its 10-0 semifinal win.
Dubuque Hempstead ended the season 3-13.
City High Returns to Substate Final
Class 3A fourth-ranked City High moved into the 3A, Substate 5 title game with a 3-0 win over Linn-Mar on Wednesday at the University of Iowa Soccer Complex.
The win was the fourth straight for City High and improved the Little Hawks to 15-4 on the season.
Linn-Mar closed the season 9-9.
City High will be seeking a seventh consecutive state tournament appearance when it faces Ottumwa on Saturday at Noon at the UI Soccer Complex.
Ottumwa (13-5) advance to the Substate 5 title game with a 2-0 win over Muscatine.
Pechous Scores Twice in Regina Win
The top-10 showdown in the Class 1A, Substate 3 finals is set.
Nick Pechous and his Regina teammates made sure of that on Wednesday.
Pechous scored a pair of goals to lift top-ranked Regina to a 4-0 win over Postville in a 1A, Substate 3 semifinal on Wednesday at Regal Field.
Regina improved to 14-3 on the season with its fifth consecutive win and will host ninth-ranked Dyersville Beckman (12-6) in the Substate 3 title game on Saturday at Noon.
Nicholas Yowell and Alec Wick added goals for Regina on Wednesday while Mason Welter and Nate Green handed out assists in the 4-0 win.
Solon Wins Second Straight Postseason Match 5-0
Solon secured a spot in Saturday’s Class 1A, Substate 5 title game with a 5-0 win over Fort Madison Holy Trinity on Wednesday at Spartan Stadium.
Class 1A third-ranked Solon improved to 15-5 with its third consecutive win and will host second-ranked Iowa Mennonite (17-1) in the substate final on Saturday at Noon.
Iowa Mennonite knocked of seventh-ranked West Burlington/Notre Dame 2-1 in the other Substate 5 semifinal on Wednesday.
Clear Creek Amana Falls at No. 2 Marion
Clear Creek Amana had its late-season surge come to an end with a 6-1 loss to Class 2A second-ranked Marion in the 2A, Substate 5 semifinal in Marion.
Alex Whalen, Tim Schuttloffel, Jaffer Murphy, Will Hernandez, Connor Gorton and Jacob Deiters all scored goals for unbeaten Marion (14-0).
Marion will face Mount Pleasant (12-6) in the Substate 5 title game on Saturday while Clear Creek Amana ended its season 5-12.
Cedar Rapids Xavier Ends Liberty High’s Season
A historic season for Liberty High came to an end on Wednesday with a 6-0 loss to fourth-ranked Cedar Rapids Xavier in a Class 2A, Substate 4 semifinal in Cedar Rapids.
Andrija Mijatovic scored two goals and had two assists for the Saints which advanced to take on No. 12 Central DeWitt (11-5) in the Substate 4 title game on Saturday.
Liberty High closed the first winning season for a team in school history with a mark of 10-7.
