DES MOINES – Sometimes when you know you just know.

Ainsley Schrock just knew on Thursday.

From the moment the discus left her hands Schrock knew her first throw at the Class 3A state track and field meet was a good one.

“I knew right away,” Schrock said. “I came out of the circle with a big smile on my face.”

Schrock never stopped smiling.

The Clear Creek Amana launched a career-best toss of 132-4 on her first attempt and no one got within three feet of her as Schrock claimed the 3A discus title at Drake Stadium in Des Moines.

“I could feel it that today was a good day,” Schrock said. “I just did my best and told everybody that I could do. I watched myself do it in my head and then when I did it I was super pumped.”

 

Schrock became the second discus champion in Clear Creek Amana history and the first since Caroline Ruppert won back-to-back 2A titles in 2001 and 2002.

Her toss of 132-4 was more than four feet better than her previous career best of 127-9 set last month.

“She is only a sophomore and she is a great kid that works hard,” Clear Creek Amana coach Jane Astor said. “We might be looking at a three-time state champion.”

Schrock was sixth at state last season as a freshman with a then career-best toss of 117-8.

She qualified for the Drake Relays for the first time last month and left without a medal but with valuable experience.

“Every time you get in this facility and this ring it gets a little easier and this is her third time in the circle,” Astor said. “I think just the fact she is really comfortable here was important.”

Schrock was confident in her return to Drake Stadium on Thursday.

Confident but still a little nervous.

“I think being here at state last year and being at Drake helped me today,” Schrock said. “I was still nervous but that experience definitely helped.”

Schrock calmed her nerves with what proved to be the winning throw on her first attempt.

Only runner-up Cassidy Nerland of Webster City who entered with the top throw in 3A this season got within eight feet of Schrock with a toss of 128-5.

Sharon Goodman of Crestwood was third with a mark of 123-6.

“I thought it was possible but it was going to be a stretch,” Schrock said. “There are a lot of good girls out here to compete with and I’m glad I could do it and pull ahead of everybody.”
