IOWA CITY – Kitra Bell spent most of the day stressing out about her newest event at Thursday’s Forwald/Coleman Relays.
“Throughout the whole school day I was stressed,” Bell said. “In class all day I was stressing for the 400 hurdles.”
It was an old standard event for Bell that helped chase the nerves away.
A title in the long jump spurred Bell to a big day as West High finished runner-up to Waukee at the 46th Annual Forwald/Coleman Relays at Raffensperger Track at City High.
Bell used the long jump to ease her nerves and went on to add a title in the 100 hurdles and a fourth-place finish in the 400 hurdles as West High rolled up 130.5 points.
“All the stress goes away when I get on that run way,” Bell said. “The 400 hurdles were stressing me out the most because that’s something I haven’t done very much but the long jump, I don’t stress when I’m at the long jump.”
Bell edged teammate Katie Severt by less than an inch to win the long jump with a leap of 17-9 in her first event of the day.
She bested a strong field in the 100 hurdles with a personal best time of 15.41 and helped the West High shuttle hurdle relay team to a fourth-place finish.
“I was very impressed, especially with my 100 hurdles,” Bell said. “I wasn’t expecting that. I go into every race wanting to win but with the competition around me I said ‘if I don’t win that’s fine’. I was very proud of myself.”
By the time Bell got to the 400 hurdles the anxiousness she felt all day was gone.
In just her second ever attempt at the 400 hurdles Bell finished fourth in 1:08.37.
I like trying new things, honestly and coach (Mike) Parker knows that,” Bell said. “It really tests your limits when you do that event, it is nice to have it in your mind that you did that event and be able to accomplish that.”
Bailey Nock joined Bell as a two-event winner, sweeping the distance events in impressive fashion.Nock won the 3,000 in a seas
on-best time of 10:18.92 and edged teammate Deniz Ince by two seconds to win the 1,500 in 4:50.28.
Ince anchored the West High distance medley relay team to a win in 4:19.56 as the Women of Troy finished 53.5 points behind Waukee in the team race.
“We all are very pleased and very impressed,” Bell said. “The competition here was great and so we are pleased with how we performed.”
Chandler Haight finished runner-up in the shot put with a mark of 43-7 and Alexie Little was second in the discus with a mark of 119-0 ½.
