The All-Your Prep Sports girls basketball team honors five of the top players in the area for their efforts this season.

This year’s edition of the Your Prep Sports team features a trio of repeat selections from last year’s team and a pair of first-time picks.

The team features a nationally ranked recruit, all-state and all-conference performers, three Division I signees, four 1,000-point scorers and a state champion.

Ashley Joens (Captain)

6-0, Sr., City High

Among the top players in state history and one of the top seniors in the country, Joens capped an impressive career with a remarkable senior season that concluded with a Class 5A runner-up finish and a Miss Iowa Basketball award.

A four-time all-state and Mississippi Valley Conference player of the year honoree, Joens led the state in scoring as a senior averaging 30.7 points and a career-high 11.4 rebounds per game.

Her 798 points this season are the seventh highest single-season total in state history and most ever for a big class player.

An Iowa State signee ranked as a top-20 national recruit, Joens shot career-highs from the field (62%), 3-point range (59%) and free throw line (80A%) as a senior.

The 6-foot guard led the state in both free throw attempts (245) and makes (197) while leading City High to a 25-1 record and its first state title game appearance since 2008.

Joens had 19 double-doubles, scored at least 21 points in every game and had 30 points or more 13 times.

She also ranked second in the team in assists per game (3), steals per game (3.3) and led the Little Hawks with 43 blocked shots.

Joens closed her career with 2,178 points, 13th most in state history in the five-player era and the second most ever for a large school player.

She leaves City High the school record holder for points in a career, season and game (45) and is the top rebounder in program history with 901 career boards.

Joens tied the Class 5A state tournament single game scoring record with 36 points in a quarterfinal win over West Des Moines Valley and set a new 5A tournament record with 86 points.

Logan Cook

6-1, Sr., West High

A three-year starter and two-time all-state pick, Cook capped her career by leading West High to the Class 5A state title and earning first-team all-state honors.

Cook led West High in scoring (13.8) and rebounding (6.9) while helping the Women of Troy to a 19-7 record that included four straight wins over ranked teams to end the season.

An Iowa signee, Cook eclipsed the 1,000-point mark for her career with 14 points in the state title game.

The 6-foot-1 Cook did it all for West High this season.

She ranked second on the team in assists (51), steals (41) and blocked shots and shot 46 percent from the field and 71 percent from the free throw line.

Cook had two of her five double-doubles this season during the postseason, including a 20-point, 13-rebound performance in a Regional final win over eighth-ranked Pleasant Valley.

Tatum Koenig

5-7, Sr., West Branch

One of the most versatile players in Class 2A Koenig capped her career with her best season as a prep.

Koenig was the lone player in the state to average better than 21 points, five rebounds and five assists this season while leading West Branch to a 17-7 record and a spot in the 2A regional semifinals.

The 5-foot-7 guard ranked 15th in the state in scoring averaging a career-high 21.2 points per game.

Koenig shot career bests from the field (46%), 3-point range (38%) and the free throw line (79%) while averaging better than 20 points per game for the second straight season.

It was her versatility that made the Bradley recruit one of the top players in Class 2A.

Koenig ranked second on the team in rebounding (5 rpg) and led West Branch in both assists and steals.

Her 5.3 assists per game ranked eighth in 2A and her 3.7 steals per game were a career-high.

Koenig scored in double figures in 23 of 24 games as a senior and had more than 20 points 16 times on her way to ending her career as the top scorer in program history with 1,641 career points.

Alex Wiese

5-11, Jr., Regina

Always a dominant rebounder, Wiese continued to assert herself as one of the top post players in Class 2A as a junior while earning first-team all-state honors for the first time.

Wiese averaged a double-double with 15.4 points and 10.6 rebounds per game helping Regina (21-5) to a 10th consecutive conference title and fourth straight state tournament appearance.

Her 10.6 rebounds per game ranked eighth in Class 2A and her 98 offensive boards were the fourth most in 2A.

Wiese had 14 double-doubles in 23 games this season and scored in double figures 21 times with five games with more than 20 points.

The 5-foot-11 forward shot a team-high 58 percent from the field and 70 percent from the free throw line while leading the Regals with 97 free throw attempts.

Wiese set a single-game school record with 25 rebounds in a win over West Branch and also led Regina in blocked shots and was third in steals.

Karsyn Stratton

5-8, Soph., Clear Creek Amana

Stratton followed a strong freshman season with a breakthrough sophomore campaign in which she ranked 10th in the state and second in Class 4A in scoring at 21.9 points per game.

In her first season playing point guard, Stratton shot career-highs from the floor (53%), 3-point range (41%) and the free throw line (69) while leading Clear Creek Amana to an 11-11 record.

Stratton was one of only two players in 4A to average better than 20 points and 7.5 rebounds per game this season.

The 5-foot-8 guard led the Clippers in rebounding (7.5 rpg) and blocked shots (16) and ranked second on the team in assists (42) and steals (36).

Stratton scored in double figures in 21 of 22 games and had more than 20 points 14 times.
