Little Hawks Start Strong on Day One Of State Tournament

City High didn’t get the result it was hoping for in its first day in Des Moines this week going 0-3 in its return to the state dual meet on Wednesday.
The Little Hawks did a lot to put any disappointment from that performance behind them on Thursday.
City High sent five of its eight qualifiers into the quarterfinals and kept six wrestlers alive into day two on the opening day of the Class 3A state meet at Wells Fargo Arena.
The Little Hawks got four opening round pins and sit sixth in the 3A team standings with 20 points after the opening session.
Top-ranked Fort Dodge leads the 3A field with 31.5 points followed by Waukee with 27 and West Des Moines Valley with 25.5.
The next five teams, led by three-time defending champion Southeast Polk are separated by just three points.
City High got opening round pins from Ethan Wood-Finley at 106, Wilfred Kadohou at 160, Jacob Dykes at 195 and Jacoby Murry at 285.
Senior Joey Harney advanced to the quarterfinals with a 6-0 decision over Christian Simpson of Cedar Falls at 138.
Wood-Finley (39-4) got City High off to a strong start on Thursday.
The seventh-ranked sophomore needed just 41 seconds to pin West Des Moines Dowling freshman Isiah James.
Wood-Finley will now face Council Bluffs Lewis Cenetral freshman Tanner Wink in the quarterfinals.
Fourth-ranked Kadohou (37-7) advanced with a pin of Carroll’s Parker Klocke in 4:36 at 160 pounds and Dykes (42-1) needed just 2:08 to pin Jaise Gulling of Newton at 195 pounds.
Junior Jacob Murry (36-11) capped the strong opening round with a pin of Fort Dodge junior Logan Finowski in 3:09.
Three Little Hawks face ranked opponents in the quarterfinals on Friday.
Harney (35-5) will take on fifth-ranked Drevon Ross (41-10) of Fort Dodge while Kadohou takes on No. 6 Logan Neils (33-7 of Ankeny Centennial.
Murry has the toughest quarterfinal task with a matchup with top-ranked Caleb Sanders (42-3) of Glenwood.
Seventh-ranked senior Lance Bormann (36-8) lost to top-ranked Zach Price 17-5 in the opening round but kept his season alive with a 9-1 major decision over Rylan Hughbanks of Bettendorf in the consolation round.
