Throughout the recruiting process Evan Flitz stressed the importance of finding the right fit.

The West High quarterback was seeking the perfect balance of athletic opportunity and academic prowess.

After careful consideration Flitz found exactly what he was looking for.

The captain of the Class 4A all-state team and Gatorade Player of the Year Flitz announced his commitment to Pomona College in California on Sunday via Twitter.  

“Pomona College offers me the place where I will pursue my academic and athletic aspirations to the fullest, as well as explore and develop as a person,” Flitz said on Twitter.

A straight A student and the most prolific passer in West High history Flitz had a bevy of college opportunities.

The 6-foot-1, 180-pound Flitz earned walk-on opportunities from Iowa State and Northwestern as well as interest from Ivy League programs after posting one of the best seasons for a passer in recent state history last fall.

Flitz threw for a state-leading 2,978 yards while completing 70 percent of his passes as a senior while directing West High to a 12-1 record and a second consecutive Class 4A runner-up finish.

He added 549 rushing yards and led the Trojans with 10 rushing touchdowns as a senior.

In a 35-21 title game loss to West Des Moines Dowling Flitz set 4A championship records for completions (30) and passing yards (350).

A two-year starter at West High with a career 20-4 record, Flitz completely re-wrote the program’s passing record book.

Flitz leaves West High as the career leader in yards 5,240 and touchdowns 53 with a career completion percentage of better than 70 percent.

He holds single-game records for completions and touchdowns and led West High to its first back-to-back title game appearances since 1998 and 1999.

Athletic programs at Pomona College including athletes from Pitzer College and go by Pomona-Pitzer.

The Sagehens are a Division III program and a member of Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference that went 4-4 last season.
