Conference wrestling meets have a way of turning into a war with each individual weight class its own separate battle.
In a loaded 182-pound bracket at Saturday’s WAMAC Conference meet in Maquoketa it was Solon junior Mike Hoyle that emerged as the last man standing.
Hoyle pinned a pair of ranked wrestlers on his way to the 182-pound title on Saturday lifting the Spartans to a runner-up team finish in the process.
Senior Tyler Linderbaum added an individual title at 285 pounds as Solon finished with 195 points, 19.5 back of team champion West Delaware.
Williamsburg was third with 180.5 points followed by Western Dubuque with 146.5 and Class 2A fifth-ranked South Tama with 142.
Clear Creek Amana had a trio of top-four finishers and placed 12th with 68.5 points, it’s highest point total ever at the WAMAC meet.
The seventh-ranked 182 pounder in Class 2A, Hoyle navigated a bracket with four other ranked wrestlers to earn his first WAMAC title.
Hoyle didn’t have a match go the distance on Saturday following a quarterfinal tech fall with back-to-back pins in the semifinals and finals.
Hoyle pinned sixth-ranked Dalton Rosenburg of South Tama in 5:02 in the semifinals and put fourth-ranked Western Dubuque junior Devin Ludwig on his back 34 seconds into the third period in the 182-pound title match.
Entering Saturday Hoyle was 0-3 on the season against Ludwig and Rosenburg, losing a pair of three-point decisions to Rosenburg and a 10-6 decision to Ludwig.
Hoyle reversed the trend in impressive fashion Saturday while improving to 36-7 on the season.
Linderbaum pinned his way to the 285-pound title to remain unbeaten on the season and claim his first WAMAC title.
The senior heavyweight pinned Mount Vernon senior Preston Schultz in 1:31 in the title match to improve to 29-0 on the season.
