5A No. 1 City High at 2A No. 8 Regina

City High travels down the street on Saturday for a highly anticipated non-conference matchup with east side neighbor City High.

Regina (9-3) has won three straight out of the holiday break thanks in part to the return of senior Mary Crompton.

Crompton has averaged 14.3 points in her first three games of the season since returning from an injury.

City High has been dominant during its 13-0 start, winning games by an average of 35 points with just one game decided by less than 13.

The Little Hawks are led by senior Ashley Joens who leads the state in scoring at 29.4 points per game.

Bellevue at West Branch: Winners of six of its last seven West Branch gets another chance to boost its season resume when it hosts ninth-ranked Bellevue.

West High at West Des Moines Valley: West High travels to Des Moines to face the defending state champion Tigers in a rematch of last year’s 5A state semifinal.

Clear Creek Amana at Benton Community: Sandwiched between games with 4A top-five teams Marion last Friday and Center Point-Urbana on Friday is a potential tricky Tuesday trip to Benton Community.

Player to Watch

Zoe Young, Jr. West Des Moines Valley

West High will face yet another highly ranked national prospect on Saturday in Des Moines when it takes it shot at defending West Des Moines Valley standout Zoe Young.

A Maryland commit, Young is averaging 22.9 points and 6.8 rebounds and 4.3 assists per game.

The 5-foot-10 guard also leads the Tigers with 31 steals and 29 blocks and has scored at least 32 points in two of her last three games.

Who’s Hot

Mary Crompton, Sr., Regina

A little time away doesn’t seem to have affected the sharp shooting Crompton.

The senior guard missed the first nine games of the season but has scored in double figures in each of her first three games backing, averaging 14.3 points per game during that stretch.

Crompton had a season-high 17 points her last time out against Durant on 7-of-10 shooting including 3-of-5 from beyond the 3-point arc.
