When Regina head coach Jeff Wallace revamped his team’s non-conference schedule prior to this season he did so for games like Saturday’s road test at Class 4A No. 11 Cedar Rapids Xavier.

Regina used a 10-2 run in the third quarter to break a 27-27 tie and never trailed again in a 49-44 win over the Saints in Cedar Rapids.

Mary Crompton and Greyson Dumont each scored 14 points and Kennedy Wallace has eight as Class 2A ninth-ranked Regina improved to 8-3 with its second straight win.

Regina used a 22-4 run that spanned eight minutes of the first and second quarters to build a 27-16 halftime edge.

Xavier opened the second half with 11 straight points to pull even at 27 but Regina had the games final run, a 10-2 spurt that helped the Regals build what proved to be insurmountable 37-29 lead after three quarters.

Regina made 4-of-5 free throws in the final minute to secure the win.

Caitlynn Daniels had a game-high 16 points for Xavier which dropped to 6-6 with its third straight loss.

Top-Ranked City High Cruises Past Keokuk

New year, same old results for top-ranked City High.

Class 5A No. 1 City High improved to 11-0 with a 73-22 win over Keokuk (5-5) in a non-conference contest in Iowa City on Saturday.

Ashley Joens poured in a game-high 33 points to lead City High which opened the 2018 with a 76-36 win over Waterloo West on Friday.

City High led 36-8 after the opening quarter and built a 53-12 halftime lead while cruising to its sixth straight win of at least 35 points.

Rose Nkumu scored 11 points while Paige Rocca added nine and Aubrey Joens had eight.
