Girls Basketball Roundup: West High Races to Early Lead in Win over Dubuque Hempstead

In its final game before the holiday break West High showed early it wasn’t looking ahead.
Class 5A third-ranked West High bolted to a 16-2 first-quarter lead on its way to a 73-47 win over Dubuque Hempstead on Thursday in a Mississippi Valley Conference contest in Iowa City.
Lauren Zacharias led four players in double figures with 16 points as West High improved to 7-2 on the season and enters the break riding a three-game winning streak.
Cailyn Morgan and Emma Koch each had 15 points and Logan Cook added 13 for West High.
Mackenzie Paulsen led Dubuque Hempstead (7-3) with 12 points while Morgan Krug added 10 for the Mustangs.
