Girls Basketball Roundup: West High Rebounds From Slow Start to Down Assumption in Season Opener

West High overcame a slow start that resulted from some frigid first quarter shooting to earn a 60-48 win over Class 3A sixth-ranked Davenport Assumption (0-2) in its season opener on Saturday at Coe College in Cedar Rapids.
Class 5A third-ranked West High (1-0) trailed by eight points following a first quarter in which the Women of Troy went 2-of-12 from the field and missed all four of their free throw attempts.
West High shot 44 percent from the field over the final three quarters including 46 percent in the second half to pick up the win in a game that was part of Rivalry Saturday.
Logan Cook scored a game-high 21 points and grabbed nine rebounds while Emma Koch had a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds to lead West High.
Freshman Audrey Koch added 10 points, five rebounds and four steals in her varsity debut.
West High used a 21-point second quarter to erase a 12-4 deficit after the opening quarter and take a 25-15 lead.
The Women of Troy never trailed again, leading by as many as 26 midway through the fourth quarter.
West High forced Assumption into 27 turnovers and held the Knights to 29 percent shooting.
Paige Beckner had six blocks and Emma Koch had three as West High finished with 14 blocks as a team.
Cailyn Morgan had four steals while Emma Koch and Cook each had three.
Lauren Zacharias led West High with six assists.
Lauren Herrig had a team-high 11 points off the bench for Assumption while Carlye Brown added 10 points.

Bellevue Best Regina in RVC Top-10 Showdown
Regina hadn’t lost a regular season game or a conference game since 2015.
The Regals saw both those streaks end in Saturday’s season opener against Class 2A seventh-ranked Bellevue.
Class 2A second-ranked Regina shot 20 percent, including 3-of-29 from 3-point range in a 39-29 loss to the Comets in a game played at Coe College as a part of Rivalry Saturday.
The loss snapped a 37-game River Valley Conference winning streak for Regina (0-1) which hadn’t lost a regular season game since a 49-35 loss to West Branch on February 6 of 2015.
Regina played without all-state guard Mary Crompton on Saturday as the senior sat out with a knee injury.
Regina struggled to get an offense going in her absence.
The Regals didn’t score more than eight points in a quarter and finished 10-of-49 from the field.
Regina led 15-14 at the half and took its final lead at 19-17 on a basket by junior center Alex Wiese with 3:12 left in the third quarter.
Bellevue closed the game on a 22-10 over final 11 minutes to secure the win.
Lauren Gaarde led Regina with 10 points and Wiese had eight points and seven rebounds.
Alexa Lehman added five points and six rebounds for Regina.
