TIFFIN – Zoey Boehme had spent her entire career imagining the perfect senior night sendoff.
Thanks to some help from a few of her youngest teammates the Clear Creek Amana senior setter got what she waited for on Thursday night.
Sophomore Anna Schwarting had a match-high nine kills and sophomore Karsyn Stratton had eight as Clear Creek Amana rolled to a 25-15, 25-14, 25-20 sweep of Vinton-Shellsburg in a WAMAC West Division match on senior night in Tiffin.
“This was so important to me, I’ve been thinking about this game since I was little,” Boehme said. “I wanted it to be something I’d remember so it was nice to win in three.”
Boehme directed a Clipper attack that finished with 41 kills, handing out 21 assists as Clear Creek Amana improved to 16-14 on the season and 4-3 in WAMAC West play with its fifth win in seven matches.
“This game meant a lot to me and I knew those girls would play great,” Boehme said. “They always back me up and give me a lot of help. They are great teammates.”
Schwarting and Stratton highlighted a balanced attacking performance for Clear Creek Amana as five players posted between six and nine kills.
Juniors Shauntina Williams and Amelia Pereira each had seven kills and freshman middle Hailey Pollock had six making it a happy senior night for Boehme and Kelsey Lipkea.
“We just wanted to win for our seniors,” Schwarting said. “We wanted to make sure they had a good last home game.”
Clear Creek Amana had its struggles early.
The Clippers fell into a 5-1 hole in the opening set and Vinton-Shellsburg (6-24, 1-6) pushed the lead to 10-6 with a 5-1 run.
Clear Creek Amana trailed 13-10 but used a 13-0 run to take control of the opening set and seize momentum for the match.
“The first game was a little nerve wracking,” Boehme said. “We had to get our nerves out but once we got the hang of it everything went perfect.”
Schwarting had four kills and Pollock three as the Clippers scored 15 of the final 17 points to win the opening set 25-15.
“I feel like our momentum kind of went up,” Pollock said. “We got down a little bit but we got our momentum going and we were able to keep it going.”
It was all Clear Creek Amana the rest of the way.
The Clippers jumped to a 15-4 lead and cruised in the second set and never trailed in the third on its way to a sweep-clinching 25-20 win.
“We are supposed to be playing our best ball in October and it’s becoming a reality,” Pollock said. “I think we are coming together more as a team and that has helped.”
The Clippers had six runs of 4-0 or more in the win and trailed just one in the final two sets a 1-0.
“We started communicating more and just working more as a team,” Boehme said. “We started playing like CCA.”
