Another week, another impressive district win for Regina.
Class 1A fourth-ranked Regina jumped to a 21-0 first-quarter lead on its way to a 45-7 win over Highland on Friday at Regal Field in a game that was halted with two minutes to play in the third quarter.
Senior quarterback Michael Conlon accounted for 172 yards and three touchdowns and Isaac Vollstedt had 155 yards from scrimmage and two touchdowns as Regina ran its winning streak to three.
Following back-to-back losses to Class 3A opponents Cedar Rapids Xavier and Solon to open the season Regina has outscored opponents 143-34 in three district wins.
“I thought Highland showed great effort and toughness we were fortunate to be able to have our playmakers make huge plays for us which created separation,” Regina coach Marv Cook said. “Our playmakers Isaac, Michael and Jake (Phillips) made a few big plays that created the separation but otherwise they were doing some good things.”
Vollstedt rushed for 82 yards on four carries and had first-quarter touchdown runs of 15 and 14 yards that put Regina up 14-0.
The senior running back also caught two passes for 73 yards.
“Isaac was great tonight as a runner and receiver,” Cook said. “He made big play after big play.”
Conlon put Regina up 21-0 with a 1-yard touchdown run and hit Patrick Clark for a 28-yard touchdown pass in the second quarter.
The senior quarterback finished 4-of-12 passing for 114 yards with a touchdown and rushed for 58 yards and two scores on three carries.
Freshman quarterback Ashton Cook was 2-for-2 passing for 32 yards including a 28-yard touchdown pass to Phillips.
Phillips also ran for 14 yards on his only carry of the game while Clark caught two passes for 41 yards.
Senior defensive end Cole White led the Regina defensive effort with three sacks and sophomore Rowan Udell added a sack for the Regals.
Cole White was outstanding on defense again,” Cook said. “Steve Sehl just continues to be a rock for us both offensively and defensively.”
The game ended with two minutes left in the third quarter after a lengthy delay for an injured Highland player who was taken off the field by ambulance.
Regina improved to 3-0 in District 4 play and will travel to Wilton (5-0, 3-0) next Friday for a battle of district leaders. Regina defeated Wilton 41-17 last season.
Highland dropped to 1-4 on the season and 0-3 in district play with its fourth consecutive loss.
