Given her family history it is no surprise that Logan Cook grew up an Iowa fan.
It is even less of a surprise when Cook got a chance to follow her family members to Iowa that the West High senior to be jumped at that chance.
That’s what Cook did on Tuesday when the 6-foot-1 forward verbally committed to the Hawkeyes and head coach Lisa Bluder.
Cook follows her father Marv Cook who was a consensus All-American tight end for the Hawkeyes in the 1980s and older brother Drew who is a current member of the Iowa football team.
“This is a dream come true. I have grown up in Iowa City and attended Hawkeye games and camps at Carver Hawkeye Arena since I was little,” Cook said in a release. “I’ve always looked up to the Iowa coaching staff and the players that attended the program. They have been role models for me and I dreamed that one day I would be a part of it. This decision will allow me to continue to pursue my dreams and goals as both a student and as an athlete. I’m excited to have the decision made so I can focus all my energy on having the very best possible senior year/season with my friends and teammates.”
Cook established herself as one of the best players in the state and a division I prospect with a strong junior season.
After averaging 9.1 points and 6.0 rebounds per game two seasons ago as a sophomore, Cook averaged 15 points and 6.2 rebounds last season while helping West High return to the state tournament.
Cook was a first-team Class 5A all-state pick by the Iowa Newspaper Association last season when she shot 48 percent from the field and 74 percent from the free throw line and also averaged 1.8 steals and 1.6 assists per game.
“Logan has improved every year since starting high school and I know she will continue to make herself better,” West High coach B.J. Mayer said. “She is a quality young lady that will fit in well at Iowa.”
Cook is the first West High player to commit to Iowa since Aly Disterhoft who graduated from Iowa this spring as the all-time leading scorer in program history.
Cook is one of four returning starters on a West High team that finished 21-4 last season and advanced to the Class 5A semifinals.
