Over the past three seasons Izaya Ono-Fullard and Connor McCaffery helped West High win 101 games, reach the state semifinals three times and play for a pair of Class 4A titles.

Tuesday the senior duo did something they had never done in during their impressive prep careers.

Ono-Fullard and McCaffery were named first-team all-state for the first time both landing on the Iowa Newspaper Association 4A first-team.

McCaffery and Ono-Fullard joined junior Braden Houston as West High first-team honorees after helping the Trojans to a 32-9 record and a fourth consecutive state semifinal appearance.

Ono-Fullard was a first-team pick as an infielder after earning third-team all-state honors each of the past two seasons.

The Trojan third baseman led the state with 11 home runs and was second in 4A with 60 RBI while posting team-highs of 49 runs, 16 doubles and a .421 batting average.

McCaffery earned first-team honors as an outfielder, moving up from second-team last season as a junior.

An Iowa recruit, McCaffery hit .385 with six home runs and 49 RBI this season while drawing a team-best 31 walks.

McCaffery scored 27 runs and posted a .513 on-base percentage and also went 6-1 with a 1.75 ERA in 32 innings pitched.

“They were talented when they came in and they’ve done what you hope people do they’ve grown and they’ve got better as baseball players and people,” West High coach Charlie Stumpff said of McCaffery and Ono-Fullard last week. “They are smart, charismatic they know what it takes to win and they have led our group this year in a big way on the field and off the field and that’s what you hope will happen and we are lucky it happened.”

Houston earned all-state honors for the first time after establishing himself as the unquestioned ace of the West High pitching staff.

The junior righthander went 9-1 with a .89 ERA and struck out 60 while walking 20 in a team-high 63 innings.

City High senior Brett McCleary was a first-team pick as a utility player after leading the Little Hawks to a 29-13 record.

McCleary hit .331 with a team-high six home runs and 47 RBI and also led the Little Hawk pitching staff going 5-3 with a 1.33 ERA and 68 strikeouts in 47 1/3 innings pitched.

Regina had a pair of players earn all-state honors after reaching the state semifinals as juniors Ryne Schooley and Blake Berns were both named to the 2A team.

Schooley was a first-team pick as a pitcher following an impressive season that included a four-hit shutout of Treynor in the state quarterfinals.

The left-hander went 7-1 with a 2.24 ERA with 85 strikeouts and 27 walks in 56 1/3 innings.

Schooley also hit .361 with 29 runs and 23 RBI.

Berns was a third-team pick as an outfield in Class 2A after leading Regina with 17 extra-base hits, six home runs and 44 RBI.

Berns hit .374, scored 30 runs and lead Regina with a .664 slugging percentage.

Solon junior Luke Ira earned second-team honors in Class 3A after one of the top seasons in recent school history.

Ira led the Spartans in batting average (.511), hits (71), runs (54), doubles (14), home runs (6) and RBI (39).

The shortstop also added 17 stolen bases and went 3-5 with a 3.29 ERA in 55 1/3 innings pitched.
