IOWA CITY – Iowa State already has a commitment from one Joens and now the Cyclones are trying to add another Joens to their recruiting haul.
City High sophomore to be Aubrey Joens picked up an Iowa State offer last weekend following a strong performance at the Cyclones’ elite camp.
Older sister Ashley Joens, a three-time all-state pick and ESPN Hoopgurlz No. 15 prospect in the Class of 2018, committed to the Cyclones last November.
The offer was the first of Aubrey Joens who started all 24 games for City High last season as a freshman and has spent the past few weeks playing on the same All Iowa Attack squad as her older sister.
“It was very exciting,” Aubrey Joens said. “It’s a good feeling to get that first offer.”
Joens attended the Iowa State elite camp over the week and said she ‘thought she played really well’.
The strong performance at the camp was an extension of what has been an impressive summer session for the 5-foot-9 guard and ended with an offer from Iowa State head coach Bill Fennelly.
“After the camp was over coach Fennelly said he wanted to talk to me,” Aubrey Joens said. “Then he just said he wanted to offer me a scholarship. It was a surprise.”
It shouldn’t come as a surprise to see Joens collecting major college interest before her sophomore season.
Her oldest sister Courtney, a sophomore to be at Illinois, and Ashley both held scholarship offers before beginning their sophomore seasons at City High.
Aubrey Joens said she hasn’t spent much time considering her recruiting timetable just yet.
“Ashley and Courtney both had offers this early so I was hoping to get some offers but I wasn’t really thinking about it too much,” Joens said. “I haven’t thought a ton about it.”
Aubrey Joens averaged 12.1 points and 4.8 rebounds per game last season as a freshman, second on the team in both categories behind Ashley.
She made a team-high 45 3-pointers while shooting 34 percent from 3-point range and 73 percent from the free throw line.
Aubrey Joens also ranked third on the team with 47 assists and 46 steals a year ago.
During the offseason Aubrey Joens says she has worked hard on improving her defense which has been important playing against older players on the summer circuit.
“I think I’ve gotten a lot better on defense,” Joens said. “That’s one thing I’ve tried to work hard on.”
As for joining her sister at the next level Joens isn’t sure but she does believe the two have good on-court chemistry.
“I think we work good together and I think we complement each other,” Joens said. “I’m not sure about playing together yet but I think we play well together.”
