There will be a new tennis champion in Class 2A this season, West High made sure of that on Tuesday afternoon.
West High defeated defending champion Cedar Rapids Prairie 5-1 on Tuesday in a Class 2A quarterfinal matchup in Cedar Rapids.
The match started at the Veterans Memorial Tennis Center in Cedar Rapids before rain showers forced play to be moved indoors at Westfield Tennis Club.
It didn’t slow West High which won five singles matches to end the match before doubles play began.
The win sends West High to the 2A state semifinals on June 3 at Ankeny Tennis Complex at the Prairie Ridge Sports Complex.
West High joins Pleasant Valley, Ames and West Des Moines Dowling at the final four in Ankeny where semifinal play will begin at 9 a.m. followed by the title match and consolation match at 2 p.m.
Four of the six singles matches in Tuesday’s quarterfinal needed a third set to determine a winner.
West High won three of those matches to earn its second win of the season over Prairie (13-2).
Abby Jans rallied following a loss in the first set to earn a 3-6, 6-4, 1-0 (10-7) win over Karleigh Schilling at number three singles.
Jessica Moonjely defeated Maddie Renner 6-4, 4-6 1-0 (10-6) while Megan Moreland fought back for a 0-6, 6-4 1-0 (10-7) win over Megan Grimm at number six singles.
West High improved to 19-1 on the season with the win that came after West High won matches over Burlington (5-0), Dubuque Hempstead (5-0) and City High (5-1) to reach the state quarterfinals.
