Neither a little rain or a change in venue could keep the West High girls tennis team from advancing to the first round of the state tournament.

West High won a pair of matches in impressive fashion on Saturday to win the Class 2A, Region 3 title at Hawkeye Tennis and Recreation Center in Iowa City.

The Region 3 semifinals and final were originally scheduled to be played at West High but were moved indoors at the HTRC due to rain.

That didn’t stop West High which opened with a 5-0 win over Dubuque Hempstead in the semifinals and knocked off cross-town rival City High 5-1 in the Region 3 title match.

West High will face the winner of the top half of the Region 3 bracket in the first round of the state tournament on Tuesday, May 23 at 3 p.m. at the Veterans Memorial Tennis Complex in Cedar Rapids.
