The career achievement list for Hannah Bormann is already quite a read.
The career goal (120) and assist (45) leader at Clear Creek Amana, Bormann added a new accomplishment to the lengthy list last week.
Bormann scored a pair of goals, including the game-winner in the second overtime to lift Class 2A No. 11 Clear Creek Amana to a 2-1 win over Regina in Iowa City.
The win was the first career victory for Bormann against perennial power Regina after four losses to the Regals in her first three seasons.
“We’ve always struggled to beat Regina because they’ve always been a quality team,” Bormann said. “It’s been one of our highlighted games of the year so it really means a lot especially for the seniors who have played a long time.”
The win over Regina was a breakthrough of sorts for Bormann and her Clipper classmates who had lost 5-0 to the Regals last season and dropped a 4-1 decision to Regina in the 2014 regional finals.
Last week’s win over Regina isn’t the only breakthrough Class 2A No. 11 Clear Creek Amana is looking for.
The Clippers are 57-13 over the past four seasons but are 0-2 in regional final contests during that time.
This season Clear Creek Amana plans to change that.
“I think we are just kind of taking it one game at a time,” Clear Creek Amana senior goalkeeper Sarah Johnson said. “We don’t’ want to look ahead and look past any team, we just take it one game at a time but I definitely think we are in a good position.”
Seeking its first state tournament appearance in program history, Clear Creek Amana has looked like a state tournament team this season.
The only two losses for the Clippers have come to 2A fourth-ranked ADM and 1A No. 5 Center Point-Urbana.
Led by Bormann who ranks eighth in the state with 24 goals, Clear Creek Amana has outscored opponents 38-7 in its 12 wins.
Clear Creek Amana will host the winner of Carlisle and Grinnell in its postseason opener on May 30th and would likely travel to No. 7 Cedar Rapids Xavier for the regional final on June 5.
“That’s our goal is to be at state,” Bormann said. “We believe this team is capable of that and I think we are playing like it.”
Don’t Let The Record Fool You: Defending 1A runner-up Regina enters the final two weeks of the regular season with a pedestrian 3-9 record after a 1-2 performance at the Waverly-Shell Rock tournament last week.
After seeing the Regals up close last week Clear Creek Amana coach Matt Harding warned postseason opponents not to be misled by the record.
“Their record might not be quite what it’s been in the past but they are very, very good team as we watched them,” Harding said. “I think they are going to be fine in the postseason.” They have a great tradition here, they make it to state regularly, they are playing great competition they don’t shy away from anybody.
Seven of the eight in-state losses for Regina have come to ranked opponents, with four of those losses coming to 2A or 3A opponents.
State’s Top Scorer: In 2015 Union’s Courtney Powell was the state’s top scorer with 66 goals. Last season Solon’s Josie Durr scored a state-high 46 goals.
This season the battle for the state’s top scorer once again comes down to Durr and Powell.
Durr leads the way with 61 goals through 15 matches helping Solon to a 10-5 record while Powell has 51 goals for 12-2 Union.
No other player in the state has scored more than 31 goals this season.
Hannah Bormann and Regan Steigleder are tied for eighth with 24 goals each.
