IOWA CITY – With every goal she puts up for the rest of the season Clear Creek Amana senior Hannah Bormann breaks her own school record.
The school scoring record isn’t the only thing Bormann broke on Monday evening.
Bormann scored twice, including the game-winner six minutes into overtime, as Class 2A No. 12 Clear Creek Amana snapped a losing streak to Regina that predates every member of its current roster with a 2-1 win at Regal field.
“They are always a team that we want to beat, I think ever since freshman year when they beat us in the regional final we have always wanted to get after them and they always give us a good fight,” Bormann said. “It definitely feels really good to break that streak, I can’t stop smiling.”
With two goals on Monday, Bormann upped her season total to 22, giving the senior forward 118 for her career.
Few have been bigger than her breakaway with 4:25 left in the first overtime period on Monday.
“I don’t really remember what happened I just remember turning around and seeing all my team happy,” Bormann said of her game-winning goal. “I just remember all their smiles.”
Junior Carolina Herrera found Bormann streaking down the center of the field in a well-executed Clear Creek Amana counter attack and Bormann did the rest.
She slipped a shot past on-rushing Regina keeper Megan Wick for the game winner less than six full minutes into overtime.
“That play, we worked on that exact type of situation that exact type of counter attack in preparation for this match,” Clear Creek Amana coach Matt Harding said. “It was great to see the girls execute what we had worked on.”
The win was the third straight for Clear Creek Amana (11-2) and came after a 5-0 loss to Regina last season in Tiffin.
Class 1A sixth-ranked Regina dropped to 2-7 with its fifth loss of the season to a ranked in-state opponent.
“We’ve been slowing getting better but I think today we played a lot better,” Regina coach Ann Larew said. “It’s still heartbreaking to lose when you are that close but I thought we just played so well today.”
Following a scoreless first half Bormann got Clear Creek Amana on the board first when she scored on a free kick from just outside the penalty box in the 47th minute.
Regina pressed forward following the Bormann goal and after several strong saves by Clear Creek Amana keeper Sarah Johnson finally got the equalizer from Anna Ziniel in the 62nd minute.
The Regals had several chances to take the lead in overtime but couldn’t sneak another shot past Johnson, who came up with big save after big save.
“I was frustrated after the goal, I’m always frustrated after a goal,” Johnson said. “I believe I can save every goal if I was in better position so I was frustrated but you have to leave the past in the past and move one. It kind of pumped me up to make sure they didn’t get another one.
Greyson Dumont hammered a shot off the post in the 73rd minute and Lauren Gaarde just missed knocking in a Dumont cross in the final minute as the Regals controlled possession for most of the second half.
“I don’t know how much more pressure we could have put on them, they just didn’t drop in,” Larew said. “It was the most encouraged I have been all year and they did not at all hang their heads. We are a good team and tomorrow we will be a better team.”
It was more of the same in overtime as Regina pushed forward to create chances.
Clear Creek Amana picked just the right moment for a counter punch.
A deep through ball to the speedy Bormann turned into a one-on-one situation with Wick as Bormann outraced the Regina defense for the game-winner.
“We look for those counter attacks and it happened that the counter attack worked well for us,” Johnson said. “Hannah is such a good player, it’s always good to use her.”
