TIFFIN – While preparing her team for a meet Jane Astor prefers to focus on variables that are within her control.
Unfortunately for the veteran Clear Creek Amana coach the cause of the Clippers’ success at Friday’s Creek Classic Relays isn’t something she can regulate.
Clear Creek Amana took advantage of nearly ideal weather conditions to turn in its best performance of the young season placing fourth in the Class A division of its own meet in Tiffin.
The Clippers rolled up 85 points at sun-splashed Clipper field to finish behind team champion Mount Vernon with 146, runner-up Solon with 120 points and Mid-Prairie with 97.5.
“I think we are sunny day weather runners,” Astor said with a smile. “We performed a lot better tonight than we have.”
Astor was joking about the Clippers only performing under sunny skies.
She wasn’t joking about her team turning in its best performance of the season at home on Friday.
Freshman Karsyn Stratton won both the 100 and 200 and Clear Creek Amana got runner-up finishes for Mariah Roller in the discus and Kaylie Barker in the 3,000.
“It was so nice to look outside on a meet day and see the sun, it makes you feel so much happier and so much more excited,” Stratton said. “Having this weather, with the sun shining, it felt great and I thought we performed well.”
Stratton edged Williamsburg’s Brittni Gilbert at the finish line to win the 100 in 13.58 and added a title in the 200 in 27.8.
She ran a leg on the 4×200 relay team that placed third in a time of 1:53.22 and added a third-place finish in the long jump.
“I think she looked really good in the 200 tonight,” Astor said of Stratton. “You always want to keep getting better and I thought she looked better tonight.”
Solon had one individual champion, freshman Gabbi Bullard in the 400 hurdles, but won three relays and was second in another on its way to a runner-up team finish.
“The things that we really wanted to get done tonight got done,” Solon coach Brent Sands said. “We have some great depth in our 400s right now and the times we are running are pretty good so I think we have a chance to go pretty low.”
Solon won the sprint medley, 4×200 and 4×400 relays and finished runner-up in the shuttle hurdle relay, posting season-best times in all four events.
The foursome of Taylor Ryan, Abby Smith, Cayley Annis and Erin Kerkhoff won the 4×200 in 1:48.49, better than five seconds faster than the Spartans’ previous best time in the event this season.
Kerkhoff and Ryan both ran legs on the winning sprint medley and 4×400 relay teams that posted season-best times.
“Our 4×200 ran well, we kind of put some people together for that and I was really happy with our sprint medley time,” Sands said. “For the most part things were really good.”
Ryan and Kerkhoff joined Sophie Nicol and Abby Smith in winning the 4×400 by more than 11 seconds over Independence in 4:09.04.
Sayler McIlravy and Alexis Sands joined Ryan and Kerkhoff on the sprint medley team that took nearly two seconds off its previous best time while winning in 1:51.78.
Sands added a runner-up finish in the 100 hurdles for the Spartans.
“It’s hard to go anywhere near here and not have some serious competition and that’s what we want and hopefully that brings out the best in you,” Brent Sands said. “I think we’ve been going out and competing and the dividends of that are usually seen at the end of the year.”
West Branch won four relays and got an individual title from Paige Miller in the 400 hurdles to place third in the Class B Division with 104.5 points.
Pekin won the Class B title with 176.5 points followed by Durant with 113.
Miller cruised to a win in the 400 hurdles in season-best time of 1:06.2 and anchored three relay teams to wins in season-best times.
The senior ran the anchor on West Branch’s winning shuttle hurdle, 4×200 and 4×400 relay teams, all of which posted their best times of the year on Friday.
“I thought it went pretty well, I was super happy with everything,” Miller said. “We are getting better each meet which makes me happy.”
Tatum Koenig and Kaiya Luneckas joined Miller on all three winning relay teams while Taylor Thein ran a leg on the 4×200 and Jaylen Votroubek ran in the shuttle hurdle and 4×400.
The West Branch sprint medley team of Thein, Votroubek, Luneckas and senior Haley Mullinnix won in a season-best time of 1:58.12.
