Regina Takes Advantage of Rare Opportunity to Run at Home

IOWA CITY – For many track and field teams, the chance to compete at a home meet is a once-a-year opportunity.
At Regina, it hasn’t even been that frequent of an occurrence for the past few seasons.
Track resurfacing work forced a change of the venue for the Regals’ home meet two years ago and last season it was weather that denied Regina a chance to compete at home.
Not even another round of rough weather last Saturday could stop Regina from hosting the Bob Brown Invitational this year.
It came a week later than scheduled, but Regina hosted its first track meet in three years on Saturday under sunny skies at Bob Brown Track at Regina.
“It’s nice to finally have one year because this is our first one here in a long time,” Regina senior Jack Jensen said. “It was disappointing not having a chance to run at home in the past so having a meet here our senior year is great.”
Regina finished fourth in both the boys and girls meets while Davenport Assumption edged Clear Creek Amana by one point for the girls team title.
Anamosa outdistanced West Liberty and Clear Creek Amana to claim the boys title in a meet rescheduled from last Saturday by weather.
“The kids were bummed last week when we told them we were going to postpone it so they were excited to compete,” Regina girls coach Chad Swope said. “They were excited to run here, a lot of teams were just excited to get out and run so we were thrilled to get it in.”
Regina won four events on Saturday, two of the wins coming from Jared Brinkman who swept the throwing events on its way to a fourth-place finish in the boys meet.
The Regals placed first and second in the shot put as Brinkman won the title by nearly 11 feet over teammate Alex Moore with a toss of 58-4 ¼.
Brinkman added a title in the discus in his first ever home meet.
“This is my first actual meet here at home so I was excited for that,” Brinkman said. “I was excited to do discus on a nice day and I threw a pr so I think that will get me to the Drake (Relays) but I need to just keep improving.”
Brinkman won the discus with a career-best toss of 151-0 ½ to outduel River Valley Conference rival Bryce Esmoil of West Liberty.
The throw by Brinkman is currently the 12th best effort in the state this season.
“His goal all along was to make discus and try to win Drake and state in the shot and his work ethic is great,” Regina coach Chris Murdock said. “He knows this is his last shot. Something with him is clicking this year and he is putting in the time.”
Jensen added a title in the 400 and Nathan Meyer won the 1,600 to pace Regina.
Meyer clocked a time of 4:55.5 to win the 1,600 while Jensen outraced the field in the 400, finishing nearly three seconds in front of Joe Fish of Anamosa.
Jensen also ran a leg on the Regina 4×100 relay team that finished second in a time of 45.9.
“I think I ran pretty well and all of our relays ran well, so I was really happy,” Jensen said. “From the first indoor meet to now we have made a lot of improvements and we’ve had a lot of guys step up.”
Nick O’Connor won the 3,200 in 10:34.05 and Zach Kabbage won the long jump with a leap of 19-1 ½ to pace Clear Creek Amana in its first meet of the season.
Clear Creek Amana also won the shuttle hurdle relay.
“It’s good to get some early season marks in,” Clear Creek Amana coach Ben Robison said. “We are excited to get out and really start running our events that we are going to run.”
On the girls side, Clear Creek Amana won four events and finished second behind Davenport Assumption with 67 team points.
The Clippers won three field event titles as Karsyn Stratton won the long jump (15-10 ½), Mariah Roller won the discus (107-4) and Danielle Wnek won the shot put (30-4).
Madelynn Langridge won the 100 hurdles for the Clippers.
Regina got a title from Molly Vittetoe in the 400 hurdles and Grace Swenning finished third in the 400, fifth in the 200 and ran on the Regina 4×100 relay team that placed third.
“We are just thrilled to get it in and we are happy to have a chance to run here,” Swope said. “We have a smaller group of girls this year but they are great kids and they are doing a great job.”
