IOWA CITY – City High senior Luci Murphy did her best to stay warm at the Steve Sherwood Relays, which started out under a sunny sky but finished in chilly low-40s temperatures.

“Just jumping around a lot trying to keep your body warm and trying to find places where there weren’t shadows,” Murphy said.

Whatever she did worked. Murphy led the Little Hawks’ effort with victories in both throwing events in the first outdoor meet of the season Tuesday at the Raffensperger track.

“I was extremely happy,” Murphy said. “My discus (122 feet, 7 inches) was a jump of about 10 feet from my last few times.”

That was a personal-best throw.

 “When it went out there, I was like ‘Oh my gosh where did it go,’” she said. “I was jumping all the way to pick up my discus.”

She also threw a personal best in the shot put (37-2.5) by two feet.

“Luci was great,” City High co-coach Joe Graf said. “She’s worked really hard in the off-season. She went to some throwing camps and the work in the off-season is starting to pay off. We’re hoping to see even more from her.”

Bettendorf won the eight-team meet that has been known to feature some wintry conditions but was seasonal this time around. The Bulldogs, who won 10 events to repeat as champs, finished with 182 points to outdistance the Little Hawks by 37.

 “We have a big freshman class and a big sophomore class, so we’re young,” Graf said. “We’ve got some freshmen who’ve stepped up into big roles, and they’re kind of scared of it but I think they did a pretty good job.”

City’s Emma Clark won the 100 meters and was third in the 200. Clark won the second and final heat of the 200, but two Burlington runners (Callie Anderson and Angel Baylark) in the first heat had slightly better times. It would have been an entertaining race if all three had been in the same heat.

“I got out to a good start and I held my pace through the rest of the straightaway,” Clark said of winning her heat.

Clark jumped to a big lead in the 100 and sailed home. Teammate Emma Cooper was second.

 “It’s really important to go out strong to do well in that race,” Clark said.

Clark and Cooper also ran on City’s third-place 4×100 relay.

 “Emma Cooper and Emma Clark are our top two sprinters at this point,” Graf said. “We need to fill in a few more and get a good relay in.”

Some kind of glitch at the finish line resulted in some of the 3,000-meter runners going an extra lap. Officials were able to determine the placewinners, but the times were thrown out. City’s

Cedar Rapids Washington’s Amara Taylor won both hurdle events and Reagan Gorman’s push at the end earned her the 1,500 title. Mount Pleasant won the shuttle hurdle relay.
