Connor McCaffery’s prep basketball career has been filled with state tournament appearances, conference championships and individual awards.

The West High senior point guard added another to his growing list of career accomplishments on Wednesday.

McCaffery was named a Mississippi Valley Conference divisional player of the year for the first time on Wednesday when he was announced as the 2016-2017 Mississippi Division athlete of the year.

The 6-foot-6 McCaffery led West High in scoring (19.8) and rebounding (4.7) while directing the Trojans to a 15-1 conference mark and a third consecutive divisional title.

McCaffery added 3.9 assists and 1.8 steals per game this season on his way to being named athlete of the year and a unanimous first-team selection.

It was the third straight year McCaffery earned first-team MVC honors.

Senior Devontae Lane and sophomore Patrick McCaffery joined Connor McCaffery on the first team while West High coach Steve Bergman was named Mississippi Division coach of the year.

Lane averaged 14.8 points and 3.7 rebounds per game and led West High in both assists (4.3) and steals (3.2).

Patrick McCaffery averaged 14.3 points, 4.3 rebounds and a team-best 1.6 blocks per game this season.

Class 4A top-ranked West High (20-3) has qualified for the state tournament for the seventh straight season.

City High (4-18) senior Chuck Johnson was a second-team selection in the Valley Division after averaging 11.5 points and 8.4 rebounds per game.

Dubuque Senior coach Wendell Eimers was named Valley Division coach of the year while Cedar Falls junior AJ Green was selected the Valley Division player of the year after leading the conference in scoring at 22.2 points per game.
