City High’s Ashley Joens Named MVC Valley Division Player of the Year

West High and City High both posted impressive regular seasons.
Both teams won 20 games, claimed Mississippi Valley Conference divisional titles and earned trips to the state tournament.
On Wednesday, the postseason awards began to roll in for both teams.
City High and West High each had a pair of players earn first-team honors when the Mississippi Valley Conference released its all-Division selections.
Junior Ashley Joens was named Valley Division player of the year and joined senior Kenya Earl on the first team after the duo helped City High to a 22-1 record and a share of the division title.
The 5-foot-11 Joens was the only player in the conference to average 20 points and 10 rebounds on the season.
Joens led the MVC in scoring with 21.1 points per game and rebounding at 10.3 rebounds per game.
Earl added 11.4 points and 3.9 rebounds per game as City High finished 12-1 in MVC play.
Freshman guards Rose Nkumu and Aubrey Joens were each named to the Valley Division second team.
Nkumu averaged 8.4 points and 2.7 assists per game while Aubrey Joens was second on the team in both scoring at 12.1 points and rebounding with 5.0 per game.
City High coach Bill McTaggart was named Valley Division coach of the year.
Juniors Rachael Saunders and Logan Cook each earned first-team honors in the Mississippi Division after leading West High to the division crown with a 12-1 record.
Cook led West High (20-3) in scoring with 15 points per game and rebounding with 6.2 per game and tied with Saunders for the team lead with 42 steals.
Saunders averaged 12.8 points and 3.7 rebounds per game for West High.
Senior Maddie Huinker was named to the Mississippi Division second team after averaging 8.1 points per game and West High coach BJ Mayer was named Mississippi Division coach of the year.
