An otherwise smooth postseason for Solon hit a bit of a speed bump on Wednesday night with a loss in the finals of the state dual meet.

The Spartans didn’t waste any time getting back on track Thursday.

Solon sent five wrestlers to the quarterfinals while jumping to the front of a crowded team race on the opening day of the Class 2A state meet at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines.

Second-ranked Solon had four falls and a tech. fall in the opening round and sent all eight qualifiers to the second day while racking up 27.5 team points on Thursday, 7.5 more than second place Ballard.

Bryce and Drew West, Ben Carr, Trevor Nelson and Graeson Dall all won opening round matches for the Spartans on Thursday.

Top-ranked Bryce West (51-1) pinned Jack West of Winterset in the opening round at 120 pounds while No. 2 Drew West (52-1) needed just 21 seconds to pin Lucas Carter of Harlan in his 126-pound opener.

No. 9 Ben Carr (39-8) posted a 23-6 tech fall over Dawson Riemenschneider of East Marshall/GMG in the opening round at 138 pounds.

Graeson Dall (36-5) added a second-period pin of Humboldt’s Jaden Kampen at 152 and No. 4 Trevor Nelson (40-6) pinned Isaiah Mitchell of Decorah in 1:39 at 160 pounds.

Four of the Solon quarterfinals face ranked opponents on Friday.

Bryce West will face sixth-ranked Philip Ihde (24-2) of Decorah in the 120-pound quarterfinals while Drew West will match up with WAMAC rival Brady Fritz (43-5) of South Tama at 126.

Carr will face No. 4 Austin Rozeboom of Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley and seventh-ranked Dall will see No. 4 John Tuttle (37-4) of Spirit Lake in the 152-pound quarterfinals.

Solon had three first-time state qualifiers drop their opening round matches but stay alive with wins in the consolation bracket.

Mike Hoyle (170), Zach Wegmann (220) and Tyler Linderbaum (285) all won first-round consolation matches by fall to advance to day two of the three-day tournament.

Fourth-ranked Linderbaum (41-9) fell to fifth-ranked Elijah Van’t Hoff of Sioux Center 7-2 in the opening round.
